Welcome to Couch Consults Episode 1 🔥 Stomach Acid: Not the Enemy.

We see this all the time. People assuming their reflux or indigestion symptoms are caused by too much stomach acid.

In reality? Many people actually have insufficient (too little or not acidic enough) stomach acid.

✅ Adequate stomach acid is critical for absorbing nutrients like:

* Iron
* Vitamin B12
* Zinc
* Magnesium
* Calcium
* Protein (amino acids)

Without enough acid, you can eat well… and still become deficient.

🚫 If you’re stomach acid isn’t optimal, symptoms may be:

* Bloating after meals
* Indigestion
* Anaemia
* Fatigue
* Undigested food in stool
* Gut bacterial overgrowth
* Hair, skin and nail issues

🤔 Sound familiar?

Many people have been on PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitor) for 10+ years or are always reaching for an antacid, under the assumption that “too much acid” is the problem.

PPIs absolutely have their place, short term. Long term acid suppression can impair nutrient absorption, allow pathogens to remain present and alter gut balance.

⚠️ Insufficient acid may be a result of:

* Autoimmune conditions
* Hypothyroidism
* H. pylori
* Pernicious anaemia
* Bariatric surgery
* Ageing
* Chronic stress

If low stomach acid is suspected:

✔ Address underlying drivers
✔ Consider digestive enzyme supplementation

💡 Final tip:
ALWAYS take digestive enzymes WITH MEALS. With your first mouthful of food, not before or after.

Hope this has given you some insight. Save, share or let us know your thoughts!

Ensure you’re getting the most accurate pathology results (because nobody likes going back for a re-test 💉)

FASTING
Not all tests require fasting but definitely double check in case you need to.
Fasting when it’s not required usually won’t ruin the test but eating when fasting IS required definitely can cause inaccurate results!

You usually need to fast for:
✔️ Glucose
✔️ Insulin
✔️ Cholesterol / Triglycerides
✔️ Iron studies

If fasting is required:
8 -12 hours fasting. Not longer than 12 hours unless directed to do so.

For example:
Dinner by 7–8pm → test 7–8am

✔️ Water only
🚫 No coffee (even black)
🚫 No tea, juice, sweeteners or gum
🚫 No alcohol the night before
🚫 No hard training before the test

Why no hard training?
Intense exercise can temporarily raise liver enzymes, glucose, inflammation markers and muscle enzymes (CK).

And ideally, try to use the same pathology company each time. Different companies can use slightly different ranges and methods, which makes tracking progress harder.

Save this for later or share with someone who might need it!

Every day, on repeat ☕️💩🤰

The throbbing head, the nausea, the sensitivity to lights, sounds and smells...Menstrual migraines aren’t random headaches; they’re a predictable response to the drop in oestrogen just before your period.

Our must haves that can provide support:

💊 Magnesium. The migraine gatekeeper.
Magnesium levels drop before your period, leading to over-excitable nerves and blood vessel constriction. Magnesium calms nerve firing and relaxes brain blood vessels.
This explains why migraines often occur right before bleeding, during high stress or after poor sleep.
Dose: 300–600 mg daily. Start 7–10 days before your period for prevention. Choose glycinate, threonate or citrate (avoid citrate if sensitive).

🔶 Turmeric. Calming the inflammatory trigger.
When oestrogen drops, inflammatory messengers (prostaglandins) increase. These don’t just cause period pain; they can trigger migraine pathways in the brain. Turmeric helps by reducing inflammatory signalling, calming neuro-inflammation and supporting liver clearance of inflammatory by-products.
This is especially helpful if migraines accompany period pain, heavy cycles, PMS or endo-type symptoms.
Tip: Absorption matters, the right formulation is key.

⚡️B vitamins. Powering the migraine-prone brain.
Migraines are linked to reduced energy production in brain cells. B vitamins (especially B2, B6 - P5P, B12 and folate) support mitochondrial energy (ATP), neurotransmitter balance and oestrogen metabolism.
Key point: Activated forms are better tolerated for sensitive nervous systems.

💧Electrolytes. Hydration isn’t just about water.
Menstrual migraines are worsened by subtle electrolyte imbalances, not just dehydration. Oestrogen influences fluid and sodium regulation, low sodium or potassium levels can trigger headaches and electrolytes support nerve signalling and blood vessel stability.
This is particularly relevant if you: crave salty foods before your period, feel dizzy, flat or headachy with exercise or drink plenty of water yet still get headaches.

Hope this helps you or someone you know!

💊Taking statins? 👶Need fertility support? 🫩Feeling flat/achey/burnt out?

Consider Ubiquinol.

Ubiquinol is the active, ready-to-use form of CoQ10, a nutrient your body needs to make energy inside your cells.

Statins, stress, ageing, intense training and chronic fatigue all deplete CoQ10, which is why people can feel flat, sore or slow to recover. Ubiquinol bypasses the conversion step, making it easier to absorb and more effective when demand is high.

We often prescribe up to 300 mg daily because lower doses tend to maintain, not restore. Higher doses better support cellular energy, muscle recovery, antioxidant protection and overall vitality.

Best taken with food (and some fat). Avoid late at night if you’re sensitive, and monitor if on blood pressure or blood-thinning meds. As always, have a chat to one of our practitioners to ensure this is the right supplement for your health needs 😉.

✏️📓 We’re almost back into the swing of things…

Sport bags in the car.
Music lessons straight after school.
Homework in the back seat.
Dinner at 8pm.
Weekends travelling to various activities here and there.
Looking after older family members.
Parents working full-time then clocking on again as kid taxi 🚗

Sound familiar?

When life is just “life-ing” and you’re doing all the right things. Healthy meals, keeping active, prioritising family time but when life runs this fast, burnout and sickness don’t come from “doing it wrong”.

💥 What actually wears families down is rarely one big thing. It’s the combo:
Constant stress hormones.
Missed meals or grab-and-go food.
Poor sleep.
Repeated exposure to bugs.
No time to properly recover.
Your immune system and nervous system don’t get a break and eventually, someone gets sick.
And then everyone gets sick 😅

💊 Supplements that actually earn their spot. Not 20 bottles. Just the basics that help families cope with stress and germs:
Immune support (vitamin C, zinc, D, herbs).
Gut support (because immunity lives there).
Magnesium for stress, sleep, and nervous systems.
Adaptogens for parents running on fumes.
Sleep support to allow the body to recover overnight.

If the goal isn’t to do less, at least ensure everyone is well enough to keep up with the life you’ve built.

Being busy doesn’t cause the crash. It comes from being busy without support and recovery.

🥩 Increasing iron isn’t always about eating more red meat.

Sometimes it’s inflammation, missing cofactors, stress or poor absorption that stops your body from actually using the iron you’re already getting.

If iron supplements upset your gut or “just don’t work,” food-based organ supplements can be a smarter next step.

Not more iron. Iron in the right form, with the right cofactors.

And no, you don’t have to wait for anaemia to support iron. Symptoms often show up long before haemoglobin drops:
😴Fatigue
👨🏼‍🦲Hair loss
🥶Cold intolerance
🦵Restless legs
🏋️Poor exercise tolerance
😮‍💨Shortness of breath with exertion

The good news is we’ve got an option that’s suitable for the whole family. Easy, convenient and no need to force feed offal at dinner time.

Our team includes a Naturopath too. Whether it be just retail or in our clinic, we practice and promote holistic and integrative health. What that means is, we treat the underlying issue. We don’t put bandaids on things. Not sure if we can help you? Well just send us a message to find out!
