Welcome to Couch Consults Episode 1 🔥 Stomach Acid: Not the Enemy.
We see this all the time. People assuming their reflux or indigestion symptoms are caused by too much stomach acid.
In reality? Many people actually have insufficient (too little or not acidic enough) stomach acid.
✅ Adequate stomach acid is critical for absorbing nutrients like:
* Iron
* Vitamin B12
* Zinc
* Magnesium
* Calcium
* Protein (amino acids)
Without enough acid, you can eat well… and still become deficient.
🚫 If you’re stomach acid isn’t optimal, symptoms may be:
* Bloating after meals
* Indigestion
* Anaemia
* Fatigue
* Undigested food in stool
* Gut bacterial overgrowth
* Hair, skin and nail issues
🤔 Sound familiar?
Many people have been on PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitor) for 10+ years or are always reaching for an antacid, under the assumption that “too much acid” is the problem.
PPIs absolutely have their place, short term. Long term acid suppression can impair nutrient absorption, allow pathogens to remain present and alter gut balance.
⚠️ Insufficient acid may be a result of:
* Autoimmune conditions
* Hypothyroidism
* H. pylori
* Pernicious anaemia
* Bariatric surgery
* Ageing
* Chronic stress
If low stomach acid is suspected:
✔ Address underlying drivers
✔ Consider digestive enzyme supplementation
💡 Final tip:
ALWAYS take digestive enzymes WITH MEALS. With your first mouthful of food, not before or after.
