Trailblazing doctor takes the helm as Townsville Hospital and Health Service’s new clinical lead for urogynaecology. 👩‍⚕️✨

Dr Kurinji Kannan has spent her career leading the way for female doctors in north Queensland.

“I am passionate about providing high-quality, patient-centred care and I have a strong commitment to advancing the field of urogynaecology through research and education,” Dr Kannan said.

Kurinji Kannan was also the first Indian-born female urogynaecologist in Townsville, and the first female doctor to perform robotic surgery in the region. 🤖🩺

From Monday, Verve Men’s Clinic shall offer full GP services for men 🙋🏾‍♂️🙋🏼‍♂️🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏿‍♂️🙋🏽‍♂️

In the heart of the City on Denham Street, Verve has become North Queensland’s only dedicated men’s health facility, encouraging men to seek health advice and treatments as much as possible 🗯️❓

This is because compared to women, men visit the doctor less frequently, have shorter visits and only attend when their illness is in its later stages 😷

Men, particularly older men, typically prefer to see a male doctor for intimate or private issues. However, the family doctor can often be female 🩺

Introducing Dr Jonathan Fenton FRACGP MBBS (Hons), Verve’s Co-Director and one of two resident GPs at our clinic 🥼🥼

Dr Jonny relocated to tropical North Queensland from Ireland, having completed his medical degree at the University of Glasgow, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Meet our Urological Surgeon Dr Philippe Wolanski (MBBS, FRACS Urol)

Dr Philippe is a highly respected and accomplished urological surgeon based in Townsville. He is a proud North Queenslander, having completed his undergraduate degree at James Cook University in Townsville and his urological training in Queensland. He honed his skills further during his post-fellowship year at the state-of-the-art Gold Coast University Hospital. Seeking to further expand his expertise, he completed an honorary fellowship in Andrology and Reconstructive Surgery at University College London Hospital.

Recognising the need for specialised men's health services in North Queensland, Dr Philippe has now co-founded Verve Men's Clinic, to provide men in Regional Queensland with access to the latest treatments and services for erectile dysfunction and cosmetic enhancements.

Here are some ways you can help:
✔️ Be open and honest about your own challenges. This shows others that it's okay to talk about mental health.
✔️ Pay attention to your loved ones and look for changes in their behaviour, personality, or how they talk. Ask them how they're feeling.
✔️ If you hear someone say something negative about men's mental health, politely tell them that their words can be harmful.
✔️ Create a safe space for your loved ones to talk about their mental health challenges and seek help.

Gonorrhoea is a common STI that's on the rise in Queensland. 📈

It can infect the p***s, va**na, a**s, eyes, or throat when exposed to unprotected va**nal, a**l or oral s*x or from fingers and s*x toys during s*x play.

If and when symptoms do occur, they usually develop a few days to a week after infection.

In most cases, gonorrhoea can be treated with antibiotics. However, drug-resistant strains are becoming more common and may need more specialised treatment. Previous treatment doesn't make you immune to new infections. 💊

Left untreated, gonorrhoea can potentially lead to serious health issues (like pelvic inflammatory disease) and infertility.

If you're having s*x or sharing s*x toys, stay safe by using a condom with water-based lubricant. Also, have regular STI checks — every year or every partner (whichever is first). ✅

Did you know? 🤔

We're currently renovating our premises - a 1930s art deco building on Denham Street👷‍♂️

But not only does the building look good, it also holds some of Townsville's historical significance due to a previous owner...

Because the building was once owned by a Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Arthur Fadden!

Sir Arthur Fadden or "Heartie Artie" as he was affectionately named, held the top job for no more than 39 days in 1941, and joked that he was like a flood in that he "reigned for 40 days and 40 nights"

Heartie Artie, a 'billyboy cane cutter' from Ingham, rose through the positions of Town Clerk, to Accountant before opening his own firm on Denham Street in Townsville 👏

He became Prime Minister after many years of holding the position of Treasurer for the UAP-Country Party coalition, and due to the resignation of party leader Robert Menzies.

He lost the job when two independents resigned from the Coalition, leaving him no choice but to issue his government's resignation to the Governor General later on that day, after the grand total of 39 days in power 😬

Perhaps we should apply for our own similar plaque, erected at our neighbours' at 66 Denham Street 💡 Townsville City Council
