Protecting your baby against influenza starts when you're pregnant.

For every pregnancy and at any stage of pregnancy, it is safe and recommended for women to get a flu shot yearly. Changes to immune, heart and lung function during pregnancy can increase vulnerability to flu-related complications.

Getting vaccinated during pregnancy is also the best way to protect your newborn. By getting the flu vaccine, you pass on the protective antibodies through the placenta which protects them in their first few months of life, when they are most vulnerable and too young to have the influenza vaccine.

You can also ask your family GP if you have questions about your pregnancy and recommended immunisations.

Myth: "I had the vaccine and still got the flu, so it doesn't work"

Fact: Severe flu viruses are circulating all the time, which is why people may still get the flu despite being vaccinated. However, being vaccinated can improve your chance of being protected from the flu. This is especially important to stop the virus affecting people with vulnerable immune systems.

Ask your GP about the benefits of getting a flu vaccine.

The flu (influenza) virus is most common between June and September in most parts of Australia. The virus is always changing so the flu vaccine changes too. To protect yourself during the peak flu season, a yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Ask your GP about how you can protect yourself from the flu.
