Down syndrome was named after John Langdon Down, a British doctor who, in 1866, was the first to classify this condition. Langdon Down began his career as the chief physician at the Earlswood institution, which cared for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Although he had no prior experience in caring for people with such disabilities, Langdon Down showed a profound interest and empathy for them. At a time when many ignored their value and humanity, he recognized their dignity and was outraged by the inhumane treatment they received. Physical punishment, poor hygiene, and high mortality rates were common in institutions of that era.

Determined to change this reality, Dr. Langdon Down implemented transformative measures. He hired new staff, demanded proper care and strict hygiene, banned physical punishment, and introduced activities such as crafts and hobbies for the patients. Moreover, he photographed his patients with care and sensitivity, portraying them in elegant attire and favorable poses. These images, part of a collection of over 200 photos, supported his clinical descriptions of Down syndrome, detailing physical characteristics and other relevant medical observations.

In 1868, Langdon Down took an even greater step by acquiring a mansion to house people with Down syndrome. He did not treat it as a mere institution but as a space that met the highest standards of comfort and hygiene. Residents received private education and learned activities such as horse riding, gardening, crafting, and other creative practices. To further enrich their lives, the doctor built a small theater attached to the mansion, promoting artistic and social development among the residents.

This mansion, named Normansfield, still stands today in the United Kingdom. It is now known as The Langdon Down Centre and houses the Normansfield Theatre, preserving the legacy of care and respect initiated by John Langdon Down.

It is important to emphasize that the name “Down” has no relation to delays or prognosis associated with the condition. It simply honors a doctor whose sensitivity and dedication marked a new era in the care and recognition of the dignity of people with Down syndrome.

Townsville
Message from Ergon

“We’ve had to begin proactively shutting off power in some low-lying pockets of Townsville for public safety. We’re only de-energising where it’s absolutely essential – we know it’s tough to be without power, but the safety of customers, emergency services, and our teams, has to come first.

There may be instances where someone whose place doesn’t seem to be at risk from flooding loses power, or where one street has power but not the next. This usually comes down to which section of network supplies each home or street: one property may be supplied by a different section of network or substation to that which supplies the next street or even your neighbour. These networks can stretch for many miles, and resupply depends on whether the infrastructure supplying your place has been flood damaged, potentially a long way from your home.

Due to the extent of the flood threat and the need to move quickly to safeguard everyone, we unfortunately can’t give advance notice about deenergisation. Outages will appear in Outage Finder, and when we’re able to reassess the situation and any damage, we’ll then be able to provide accurate restoration estimates https://bit.ly/409vKIk
If your place is flooding and mains power is still connected, this is an emergency – call us ASAP on 13 16 70

Thanks for your understanding – it’s all about keeping everyone safe during this incredibly difficult time.

Latest Severe Weather Warning for 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗬, 𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦 from the Bureau of Meteorology.

For people in Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:52 am Sunday, 2 February 2025.

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL LIKELY OVER NORTHEAST QUEENSLAND.

Weather situation: An elongated low pressure system embedded within the monsoon trough is currently located across the southern Cape York Peninsula resulting in enhanced rainfall and winds about the north east coasts of Queensland over the weekend. Very significant rainfall accumulations are expected due to the slow-moving nature of the low and trough in an airmass rich in tropical moisture.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast between Tully and Ayr, and inland to the far eastern Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, including the towns of Charters Towers, Ingham, and Ayr. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 120 to 200 mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 240 mm. 24-hourly rainfall totals up to 350 mm are likely.

Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is also likely between Ingham and Giru, including Townsville during this period. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 200 to 300 mm are likely. 24-hourly totals up to 600 mm are possible.

A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if very dangerous thunderstorms with intense rainfall are detected.

Strong to DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are also possible for the islands and coastal fringe between Cardwell and Giru.

The potential for heavy, locally intense rainfall and damaging winds may continue into early next week subject to the strength and position of the trough and low.

A Flood Watch and various Flood Warnings are current for parts of northeastern Queensland. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings for more information.

Locations which may be affected include Charters Towers, Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Ayr and Lucinda.

Emergency services advise people to:
▪️ If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust
▪️ Park your car undercover away from trees.
▪️ Close doors and windows.
▪️ Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
▪️ Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
▪️ Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
▪️ Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
▪️ Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
▪️ Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

Voice banking - what is it?
Voice banking is a way for you to record and store your own voice to use at a later date when you may have trouble speaking. You record your voice and then the sounds are broken down to create a synthetic version of your natural voice. After you record your voice, it can be used on a smartphone, tablet, computer or other communication device.

The Foundation is proudly partnered with SpeakUnique in the United Kingdom and will cover the cost of your voice banking.
SpeakUnique began as a research project at the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with The Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research & The Centre for Speech Technology Research.
