We’re proud that our Managing Partner, Carl Valentine, delivered the Occasional Address at the recent JCU Graduation ceremony, sharing practical insights for the journey ahead.

He encouraged graduates to seek out opportunities that stretch them, step into responsibility before they feel fully ready, and back their ability to learn and adapt along the way. His message also challenged them to resist the comfort of certainty and instead choose paths that offer growth, challenge and diverse experiences.

Payday Super is coming, and the shift to payday‑based super payments will be one of the biggest compliance changes employers face in 2026.

From 1 July, super will need to be paid within seven business days of each payday, meaning payroll systems, cash flow and internal processes may need a rethink.

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Ray Thompson as a guest speaker for our Wellness @ PVW Partners Wellbeing program. Hosted by our People and Performance advisors at Melius Solutions, Ray brought a powerful perspective shaped by his journey through elite sport with the North Queensland Cowboys, strong community ties, and his passion for helping people discover purpose and grow personally.

Drawing on lived experience, culture, and honest storytelling, Ray shared the model that underpins The Resilience Project, and his own insights of it in practise. He explored resilience, emotional intelligence, and wellbeing in a way that felt genuine, relatable, and refreshingly practical — leaving our team with plenty to reflect on and tools they can take into both work and life.

A was good reminder that resilience isn’t something we’re born with - it’s something we practise.

This morning our Townsville office had the pleasure of welcoming commerce students from JCU: James Cook University, Australia as part of their organised Firm Crawl through Townsville’s leading accounting firms.

It was a fantastic opportunity for us to give students an inside look at the dynamic world of accounting and business advisory, and what it really takes to thrive in the profession. From career pathways to real client experiences, our team enjoyed sharing insights, stories, and a genuine glimpse into life at PVW.

We loved connecting with the next generation of business leaders and hope the visit sparked a few future careers in the industry!

Cairns is seeing strong momentum in international visitor numbers, boosting confidence ahead of the peak tourism season as demand rebounds from key Asian and European markets. However, rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East add a layer of uncertainty. Disruptions to European flight routes and higher fuel prices could shift travel patterns and impact visitation if instability persists.

At the same time, the economic picture is mixed. The Reserve Bank has lifted the cash rate to 3.85%, with inflation expected to remain above target until 2028, leaving the possibility of further rate rises this year. Meanwhile, building approvals have dropped to near six-year lows, raising fresh concerns about housing supply in an already tight market.

Despite these pressures, Cairns’ labour market remains a standout, with unemployment falling to 4.5%, the only region in Queensland to improve this month.

A highly experienced Certified Practising Accountant and Chartered Accountant, Colin brings more than 20 years of expertise across both public practice and commercial roles. Beyond the qualifications and experience, it is his commitment to people and progress that truly sets him apart.

Throughout his career, some of Colin’s proudest moments have not just been complex deals or strategic wins. They have been watching colleagues grow into partners, seeing team members expand their families, and mentoring the next generation of leaders within the firm.

For clients, Colin is known for rolling up his sleeves and walking the extra mile. He thrives on partnering with businesses from inception to fruition, navigating complexity, structuring smart solutions, and helping owners maximise value, particularly when they are ready to transition into the next phase of life. Our own Townsville Manager Kayla Dodd had the privilege visiting William Ross State High School this week as a part of their Alumni marketing campaign they are doing.

She had the amazing opportunity to connect with her own business teacher Natalie Fergusson when she was a student there and to give back by having a Q&A session with their year 12 accounting class. It was a great experience, and the students had great questions and were very curious to learn more about the accounting industry.

Her take away was that it was a really rewarding experience and her cup is certainly full after it.

We’re hosting an Accounting Information Night at our Townsville office on 29th April, where you can learn more about career pathways, study options, and what life in the industry is really like.
