Feeding therapy is more than helping a child try new foods - it’s also about building confidence, reducing mealtime stress and creating positive experiences around food🫐

Our dietitians Kate & Lorena explain some ways our team can gently support children in exploring textures, colours and flavours in a safe, fun and pressure-free way.

These small steps help children overcome boundaries, develop independence and strengthen their relationship with food overtime.

If you’re noticing challenges at mealtimes or have concerns about feeding, reach out to our clinic to chat with one of our professionals. We’re here to help🫂

Congratulations to Kylee and kids for winning our Reading Basket giveaway at last Friday's Townsville Disability Network at Willows Shopping Centre.

Books are a great gift idea for kids of all ages as they provide a fun, quiet-time activity that nurtures the love of reading and helps to build strong literacy skills.

Thank you to everyone that stopped by our stall to enter the raffle and to those that spent time chatting to the team.

A big thanks to TDN for organising such a large, successful community event. We spoke to several attendees who said they had no idea there were so many so many services available in Townsville!

We’ve had one, yes. What about second breakfast? Alliance Clinics celebrated breast cancer awareness month yesterday with three Pink Ribbon breakfast events at clinics in Townsville & Mackay. The team hit their funding target, initially raising over $1000 along with a pledge from the CEO to match all donations raised.

Breast cancer affects 1 in 7 women in Australia, and it’s a cause close to many of our participants and team members. Thank you to everyone for playing your part in helping fund life-changing research.

My favourite occupational therapy tool is the balloon because it’s incredibly versatile, engaging, and adaptable for clients of all ages and abilities. Balloons instantly add fun and motivation to a session, helping to build rapport and sustain participation, especially with children. Therapeutically, they can target a wide range of skills, such as gross motor development through games like balloon tennis or “keepy uppy,” hand-eye coordination and visual tracking as clients follow and hit the balloon, and core strength and postural control when reaching or catching. They also support bilateral coordination when using both hands and can aid sensory regulation—the light, slow movement offering a calming effect, while faster-paced play provides alerting input. Because balloons are inexpensive, safe, and endlessly adaptable, they make therapy playful, engaging, and meaningful while supporting key skill development.

I would say that OT is like solving a puzzle, as every participants strengths, challenges, and environments are unique pieces. As OT's we help fit those pieces together to make the whole picture work.

I had a participant where initially, she presented as unmotivated to engage in therapy after a stroke. Initially, she wasn't improving, therefore the therapy approach was changed and through occupational therapy intervention, problem-solving strategies and involvement from the family to support engagement, together we established a meaningful goal for her to make a cup of coffee for her son. This personal connection significantly increased her motivation. She began practicing the task daily, and with consistent effort, she successfully learned to make a cup of coffee independently and the smile on her face when she did this independently was something that continues to drive me to be an OT.

Our Story

Alliance Rehabilitation was formed as a collaboration between experienced health professionals to deliver innovative, quality, effective, efficient, and safe goal orientated rehabilitation programs to North Queensland. With a vision to be a truly interdisciplinary service of the highest standard that could make a difference and achieve positive outcomes for those with the greatest and most complex needs. To achieve this, Alliance Rehabilitation has one of the largest interdisciplinary health teams in the region, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Exercise Physiologists, Social Workers, Psychologists and Neuropsychologist, Accredited Practising Dietitians & Nutritionists, Nurses and Doctors.

With the rollout of the NDIS many participants who journeyed with Alliance Rehabilitation from acute care back into the community asked if they could continue with Alliance Rehabilitation under the NDIS. This made a great deal of sense to the Directors as continuity of care and building a successful relationship with participants has always been a vital component of a successful service and achieving best outcomes; so over the past year Alliance Rehabilitation has invested in developing an NDIS service that meets the same exacting quality standards and innovative approach to practice as all other Alliance Rehabilitation programs and has begun to serve the wider community as an NDIS provider.

Innovation is a word often mentioned at Alliance Rehabilitation as the service was the first in Australia to operate a full Tyromotion Robotic and Computer Assisted Therapy suite and still the only of its kind in Queensland; the suite is a state of the art approach to upper limb therapy, maintenance and cognitive rehabilitation which makes therapy fun, effective and encourages greater outcomes. Alliance Rehabilitation is also the only service in Townsville to maintain a professional driving simulator to assist participants in their goal to return to driving as quickly and safely as possible under the guidance of Alliance Rehabilitation’s Occupational Therapy Driving Assessors.

Alliance Rehabilitation is responsive to local community needs; an example of which is the service’s new short-term specialist disability and health accommodation facility under development in Townsville, due for completion this year. The facility will assist participants return to the community, have respite or transition to their own long-term accommodation. Services in the facility will be tailored to suit individual needs, under the principals of choice and control, along with the ability for carers and family to stay with participants in the modern, state of the art, LHA Platinum level dwellings.
