Members of our Positive Possibilities Ohana (Kara, Casey and Kayla) have written a book! Please help us raise funds to pay for the illustrations. Take a sneak peek at Abbie’s forward below…
I was a twenty one year old Occupational Therapy university student when I first met Kara. I had responded to a job advertisement seeking support to build Kara’s independent living skills. However, I was merely an adult myself. Kara’s mum told me about Kara’s mishap trying to catch the bus on her own, where Kara found herself seated amongst a bunch of school children on their morning commute. I soon met Kara’s ‘friends’ Casey and Kayla (sisters). I say friends in quotation, as neither, Kara, nor the sisters, had developed the skills required to form and maintain meaningful friendships yet. They simply ‘knew each other from Auslan choir’. Fast forward seven years… Kara, Casey and Kayla have formed an unbreakable bond, supporting each other through life transitions, creating beautiful memories together, embarking on adventurous holidays, and making many new friends along the way. And in the meantime, I have learned my most valuable life lessons and gained life experience alongside them. Kara, Casey and Kayla are the driving force behind this book. A guide to transitioning to adulthood. A guide filled with hints and tips, personal experiences and the girl’s very own advice. Written by young people living with a disability, for young people living with a disability. This book has been separated into six sections:
* Self care, showering and grooming
* Meal planning and meal preparation
* Managing money
* Safety in the home
* Looking after yourself
* Looking after your home
Happy reading. Happy learning. Happy growing ###
