We didn’t have any money to put towards marketing so we got creative with an old camera and forced my niece to participate…. Luckily she likes to perform!

I still don’t have a marketing budget, I just try to do what I do well, every day 💛💙

We are back tomorrow and can’t wait to play! 💙💛

We are now closed for 2025 💙💛

We would like to thank all our wonderful families for your ongoing support.

I worked out that I delivered over 1100 therapy sessions this year… that means that I had the privilege of over 1100 opportunities to be part of your child’s story. What a gift.. 💝

I’ll be back in the office on Monday, January 12th and look forward to seeing everyone then!

“Big enough to notice, small enough to accept.”

This is the mantra you want to use when making small changes your child’s preferred foods. Making small adjustments helps children learn to accept and enjoy new foods over time.

This kid’s goal food is pasta 🍝 as this is a meal regularly served and enjoyed in their family.

Today, we added a few squirts of sauce and mixed to see what would happen! Using novel items such as the syringe here can also engage your child’s curiosity and take some of the pressure off the fact that we are changing something.

If you’ve tried rewards, stickers, bribery ect with little to no success, it’s not the incentive that’s the problem; it probably means your child doesn’t have the underlying skills to carry out the task.

Reward charts and incentives often don’t work, (or work only in the short term) because we assume the child already has the skill. And when the child ultimately can’t carry out the task and misses out on the reward it can really affect their self esteem.

How would you feel if you were repeatedly asked or expected to do something you didn’t have the skills to do, then missed out on something really cool or as a result? And what’s worse, no one is actually teaching you how to do the task, they just assume you know how! Pretty frustrated I bet!

Kids do well when they can and naturally want to please their parents and teachers, so when this isn’t happening, assume they can’t, not that they won’t and work from here 💛💙

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with Lauren, OT from Evolve Therapy Services ( in Perth!) about all things paediatric feeding!

It was so great to be able to share my skills and passion with new therapists and I realised I forgot how much I love teaching and mentoring!

So, I am going to open my calendar to be available for supervision and mentoring opportunities for new/new to feeding occupational therapists!

Currently, I can offer just one slot per fortnight ( Friday).

Please feel free to pass along to anyone who may find this useful!

💛 FUNction is pleased to announce that we are now offering specialised autism assessments. This is a comprehensive evaluation which will be completed over a number of sessions with you and your child. The process involves:

- Initial appointment with you and your child to discuss concerns, history and specific observed behaviours.
- Consultation with your child’s school, day care and other health professionals involved.
- Standardised assessments and tools to evaluate key areas including communication, social skills and sensory processing.
- Direct observation of your child to assess their behaviours and interactions.
- Report and feedback to explain our assessment findings and ‘where to’ from here

FAQ’S

- Can you diagnose my child with autism?

No. In Australia, only a paediatrician or child psychiatrist can officially diagnose autism.

The purpose of the assessment is to determine if your child meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder. Sometimes, a paediatrician may not be able to diagnose your child ‘ on the spot’ due to not always being able to observe your child in their natural surroundings where they are most comfortable. Often, a paediatrician will refer a child to an allied health professional/team for a more comprehensive observation to guide them.

The benefit of having this completed by an occupational therapist is that we can evaluate sensory processing, social skills, motor skills and daily living skills which is crucial for creating a tailored intervention for your child. However, it’s essential that the assessment is ‘signed off’ by a paediatrician or psychiatrist to ensure a comprehensive assessment and confirm a diagnosis as well as potentially obtaining NDIS funding.

- Will the assessment test for any other conditions?

No. The assessments and observations are specifically looking for traits of ASD. However, as occupational therapists, we have detailed knowledge of what typical development in children looks like and can refer you and your child to the appropriate service/s should we feel necessary.

- What are the signs that could indicate the need for an assessment?

Signs may include limited or delayed speech, differences in communication and social interaction, sensory processing challenges and repetitive behaviours. However, these signs may be due to other reasons and no single sign or behaviour in isolation indicates autism.

A diagnosis of autism can only be made when specific criteria are met.
Sometimes, your child’s paediatrician, school or other allied health team member might also suggest an assessment based on their interactions with your child.

- What assessments do you use?

We use a range of both standardised assessments and checklists as well as a thorough history with you. We will also consult with your child’s school or day care and other health professionals who may be involved with your child’s care.

-Can my child use their NDIS funds to get an assessment?

Unfortunately, any type of ‘diagnostic’ assessment is not covered through the NDIS. You may be able to claim a portion through private health insurance if applicable. Your best option would be to speak with you insurer to see if a portion of the assessment would be covered.

- How do I make an appointment?

The quickest way to make an appointment is to give us a call on 0448 510 553 – you can also leave a text or voicemail message and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

4th June, 2016

They don't know it yet, but in exactly 4 months they will open a business 😲

(She doesn't know it yet, but her husband will decide to leave said business and go back to uni as a mature age student a year later. He will never pay off his HECS obligations😂)

FUNction celebrated our 9th birthday last week.

I would like to thank all our wonderful families who make my days a little brighter and for putting your trust in me!

I hope I can continue to do this job well for at least another 9 years!

Thank you all!

* Things that cause autism *

✅ Some genetic factors - the rate of autism in siblings of a child with autism increases by about 10-20% compared to neurotypical individuals

✅ We don’t know - autism is a complex condition with no one definitive cause.

❌ Panadol

In my opinion there is NOT an epidemic of autism.

Autism has always existed.

The main difference is that we are better at identifying children earlier ( and adults!) than we were 20 years ago. Believe me, this is a good thing.

I grew up in a very small town. There were no paediatric services, certainly not a paediatrician. I didn’t know anyone who had autism.

Looking back as an adult, I wonder how many kids and families just had to ‘get on with it’ without support. Or worse, were punished when they wouldnt sit, listen or just didn’t fit it, or their brain differences were seen as some type of character flaw that needed to be corrected.

“I didn’t get all this support at school and I turned out fine!”

But don’t we want our kids to have better and do better than just “fine”?

Receiving a diagnosis can be a really difficult and draining experience, but it can also be empowering. No one understands your child like you do and you are their best advocate. No matter where you are on your autism journey, support is available 💙💛

Life Skills Queensland and Matt offered to make us another amazing toy for the clinic and here it is!!

This Shell service station is amazing and so realistic. You can see the dedication and attention to detail that has gone into the design. We are extremely grateful for this generous gesture 😃

I’ve only had it for a few hours and already we’ve engaged in so much creative, imaginative play. My favourite play scenario from today was when a kid tried to trade their car for the Tesla that I grabbed 🙅‍♀️

I don’t know who needs to hear this but:

-Melatonin won’t work if your child can’t breathe
-Rewards won’t elicit behaviour change if your child can’t breathe ( I’m not a fan of rewards/ behaviour charts anyway!)
-Punitive measures won’t teach your child anything if they can’t breathe.

Snoring, restless sleep, hyperactivity, daytime sleepiness and bed wetting are all red flags of sleep disordered breathing. Contrary to popular belief, children do not grow out of sleep apnoea.

The symptoms of ADHD are nearly identical to sleep disordered breathing.

If your child is currently being assessed for ADHD, ensure sleep disordered breathing or a paediatric sleep disorder has been ruled out first.
