Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are common symptoms of gastrointestinal infections, or ‘tummy bugs’. They are very common in both adults and children, and some forms are highly contagious.

What should I do if I or my child has vomiting and/or diarrhoea?

Most gastrointestinal infections are caused by viruses and clear up on their own with no special treatment, usually within 2 days. However, it is a good idea to ensure adequate hydration, as large amounts of fluid and electrolytes are lost from the body during bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea. Hydralyte is a product intended for use as rehydration therapy, and contains electrolytes important for normal functioning. It is suitable for adults and children, and comes in a variety of flavours and formulations to best suit your needs.

When should I see a doctor?

There are some ‘red flag’ symptoms that you should be aware of and be on the lookout for, as they can sometimes indicate a more serious problem. You should call triple zero (000) for an ambulance or go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital if you or your child experience any of the following symptoms:

-Blood in the vomit or vomit that has the appearance of coffee grounds

-Vomiting bile (a dark green substance)

-Severe abdominal (tummy) pain

-Blood in the stool or a black, tarry stool

-Signs of severe dehydration (severe headache, drowsiness and/or confusion, dizziness, fever, sunken eyes, extreme thirst)

-Stiff neck, with or without photophobia (pain or discomfort when looking at bright lights)

-Vomiting that lasts longer than 48 hours

-If your child cannot keep down a sip of liquid or does not pass
urine for more than 6 hours

-If the patient is a baby under 6 months – young infants with symptoms of gastroenteritis should always be assessed by a doctor

To prevent the spread of viral gastrointestinal infections, it is important to stay home from work, or keep your child at home from school, for at least 48 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhoea.
