A fantastic update for families navigating speech therapy 🎉

Medicare has made changes to the M10 item group that could mean more support and more rebated sessions for your family - if you have a child with stuttering, a speech sound disorder, or a cleft lip and/or palate.

Although there are specific eligibility requirements, this is absolutely a step in the right direction to improving access to speech pathology services 💜

There’s nothing quite like your client coming out with an out-of-the-box speech sound error and the frantic scramble to figure out how they managed to do that in the first place 😅 Luckily, our speechies are very practiced with finding the right cues to move forward!

No real words. No clear instructions. Just tone, timing, facial expression, and a whole lot of guessing. And somehow… it works.

That’s because communication isn’t just WHAT we say, but HOW we say it - the rise and fall of our voice, our pauses, our eye gaze, our facial expressions, our body language. All of that sits under the umbrella of pragmatics, which is the social use of language.

For some children, these unspoken rules aren’t intuitive. Knowing when to speak, how to read someone’s tone, how to interpret a “hmm…” vs an excited “mmm!” is a skill set that we might have to explicitly teach.

This trend is a fun reminder that words are only one piece of the puzzle 💜
