The team here at Minding Family would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of the people affected by the shocking and tragic events that occurred in Bondi Beach, Sydney. We extend our greatest respect and thoughts for the members of the community and to the first responders who so bravely put their own lives at risk to save and care for others.
This event will have a profound and lifelong impact on all people involved, including those targeted, the first responders and other helpers, witnesses, members of the community and members of the media reporting on the tragedy.
It is likely that feelings such as immense grief, shock, horror and fear will be widespread in the community, and across the country as the event is broadcast via media channels and discussed in official, social and informal ways. These feelings are normal to experience, and it may take days, weeks or even months to recover from such a traumatic event.
Hate has no place in our society, and neither does an attack on innocent people. Restoring our sense of safety in our communities will take time and resources.
Take care and please be mindful of what media coverage you watch and your families are exposed to. We’ll post some helpful recommendations (as created by our psychological membership groups) over the next couple of days.
