Always remember to be Sun Smart!!!

It's great being outdoors, enjoying our beautiful country and climate. But being outdoors means we’re exposed to some of the harshest and most dangerous levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

To be sun smart this summer, follow the five Sun Smart rules:

Slip on sun-protective clothing, Slop on broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, Slap on a wide-brimmed hat, Seek shade between 10 am and 4 pm, and Slide on sunglasses.

Don’t hesitate , should you have any concerns about your skin, book yourself a Skin Check. Our team of dedicated doctors offer Skin Checks all year round.

This week is National Skin Cancer Action Week (16 – 22 November 2025) the week that that highlights how important it is to remember to use sun protection here is Far North Queensland.

Often called our ‘national cancer’, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime.

Here at Hyde Park Medical, our fully qualified doctors offer thorough skin checks of all skin types.

Any irregularities and suspicious spots will be noted down and filed in confidentiality to continuously monitor their development. In case skin cancer is diagnosed, we offer treatment with minor surgery requiring only minimal invasion. This can be done directly at our practice.

Townsville, Be Prepared!!!! We have officially entered the Wet Season. This time of year can typically result in severe storms, flooding, power loss and evacuation.

To be medically prepared for the wet season, pack an emergency kit with essential medications, a first-aid kit, and a 3-day supply of non-perishable food and water. It is CRUCIAL to gather important documents like prescriptions and healthcare cards, keep a list of emergency contacts, and have a plan for your specific health needs, such as for a disability.

Before a flood

• Gather your medications: Ensure you have a supply of essential medicines and prescriptions. Store them in a waterproof container and check with your doctor or pharmacist about any special storage needs, like refrigeration.

• Prepare your first-aid kit: Stock a comprehensive first-aid kit with all necessary items and make sure it is easily accessible.

• Collect important documents: Make copies of vital documents, including insurance policies, identification, birth certificates, and a list of medical conditions, allergies, and prescriptions. Store these in a safe, waterproof location.

• Create an emergency plan: Make a household emergency plan that includes who to contact, especially health professionals like doctors and pharmacists.

• Get a doctor's advice: Talk to your doctor about your emergency plan and how to manage your specific health needs during a disaster. You can also ask about storing your medical information on a digital platform like My Health Record.

Don’t procrastinate as severe weather events are often unpredictable and move rapidly. Contact Hyde Park Medical Centre on 4772 6222 to book your consult now.

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and su***de prevention.

The Movember Foundation was developed in Melbourne in 2003 by two mates who wanted to bring better awareness to the necessity of men to focus better on their overall health and has since become a worldwide movement. The Movember charity event is housed at Movember.com with the goal of Movember being to "change the face of men's health".

The Hyde Park Medical Centre supports the Movember movement and encourages men to consider all aspects of their general health.

Any ongoing concerns or suspicions, don’t hesitate to act now. We have a team of dedicated doctors ready to assist, whether an existing patient or new. Contact us now on 4772 6222 to book an appointment.

Hyde Park Medical Centre will be wearing yellow next Thursday, 11th September 2025 to show our support for R U OK? Day.

Please join us in supporting this national su***de prevention charity which promotes and encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times. Their work focuses on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the help-giver — the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.

R U OK? contributes to su***de prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships and building the capacity of informal support networks — friends, family and colleagues — to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.

For more information, please visit the R U OK? website.
