Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service, a community-controlled health organisation

Our History
TAIHS was established in 1974. At that time, it was the fourth Aboriginal community controlled health service (ACCHS) established in Australia, and was part of the wider move for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to take control of the delivery of health care services in their communities. Today, our strategic plan is determined by our Board of Directors comprising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across the region. TAIHS’s organisational mission and vision statements demonstrate a commitment to providing holistic and culturally appropriate health services, underpinned by a philosophy of community participation, and a strong focus on care and service coordination. Our Purpose
Lead the way in providing accessible, integrated health and social support services to our people so that they can live healthier, stronger, and longer lives, preserving our oldest surviving culture for future generations.

To our valued clients please be advised that we have a change to our Dental Services

Our sector has not received dental funding for many years. Despite that, TAIHS has continued to offer dental services by using its Medicare income and engaging a private provider, Project Outback Dental (POD).

Our provider recently decided not to continue these arrangements.

Given rising healthcare costs and ongoing pressure on our health budget, TAIHS is not in a position to engage another full-time dental provider at this time.

We are very grateful to Project Outback Dental for the many years they have supported our community, and especially for their commitment to keeping costs down for patients.

To support patients moving forward, TAIHS is working closely with the Oral Health Service at Townsville University Hospital to establish a supported referral pathway.

The Breast Screen Van is Coming Back Soon!

We're excited to announce that the Breast Screen van will be visiting us again shortly.

Thanks to the fantastic response we received last year, Breast Screen Queensland has increased its visiting days.

Booking an appointment is simple! You can either schedule online https://www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au/ or call 132050 to speak with one of their friendly team members.

Key Benefits of Breast Screening

**Early Detection:** A breast screen (mammogram) can identify very small cancers, often before any symptoms are noticeable or can be felt by you or your doctor. Early-stage breast cancer frequently presents without obvious symptoms.

**Improved Treatment Outcomes:** Detecting cancer at an early stage typically means more treatment options are available, leading to higher success rates and less invasive procedures.

**Reduced Risk of Death:** Regular breast screenings have been shown to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. Since the inception of the Breast Screen Australia program, there has been a notable decrease in breast cancer-related deaths among women aged 50 to 74.

**Peace of Mind:** For approximately 95% of women, the results will be normal, offering reassurance and peace of mind.

**Free and Accessible Service:** Breast Screen Queensland provides this service free of charge to all eligible women aged 40 and over, and no doctor's referral is necessary.
