Horses model some wonderful behaviors for us to follow when we learn to listen and walk their path. Horses live in a constant state of awareness that has enabled them to survive for millions of years. They always notice what is happening in their environment, what is happening with their feelings and their bodies. Horses have an amazing ability to release stress and a truly unique capacity to share their empathy with humans. They never judge, they are completely honest and are our much-loved assistants in the healing process. They are great listeners too. No previous horse experience is required, just an open mind and a willingness to encounter a new way of allowing yourself to feel. You may be invited to meet the whole herd, take time groom one, participate in controlled lead work, perhaps a mounted experience or just share space with one of the herd that you feel drawn to. Meet Bear — The Sensitive Soul

Bear, a solidly built Quarter Horse, is generously sponsored by the Mendelson Family. We are deeply grateful for their support.

Having experienced trauma himself, Bear is an incredibly sensitive and gentle horse, uniquely attuned to the emotional states of those around him.
This lived experience of vulnerability allows Bear to connect deeply with clients who have faced trauma, offering a compassionate and non-judgmental presence.

Bear rarely wanders far from his trusted friend and closest companion, Cruise.
Cruise provides comfort and reassurance when Bear feels stressed.
Their companionship reminds us of the importance of connection and support.
Just as Cruise offers Bear reassurance, people also need safe relationships as they move through their own healing journeys.

For clients who have experienced trauma, Bear’s calm demeanour and patient nature create a safe space where they can begin to explore their own feelings.
Through interactions with Bear, clients often learn to recognise and regulate their emotions, build trust gradually, and develop resilience.

Bear’s willingness to show vulnerability encourages clients to embrace their own vulnerabilities without shame or fear.
His gentle responses offer silent reassurance and help clients feel seen, heard, and accepted.
This connection fosters healing on a deep, often unspoken level.

We’d love for you to meet Bear!

What our clients say …

“My autistic/ADHD children have been coming here for a little while, and the benefits are priceless…
This has helped them a lot, especially in their social settings, learning how to read horses/ people, and learning different techniques on self-regulation and how important it is.”

What if trying a different approach could help you move forward?

Since 2016, we’ve supported people who live with a disability who may be privately funded or accessing a range of funding schemes.
This also includes supporting Self-Managed and Plan-Managed NDIS clients, with therapy that goes beyond four walls.

We offer a calm, non-clinical, nature-based environment that many say is more relaxed and connected than some formal, more traditional clinical settings.

In addition to other therapeutic approaches and modalities, AND when it supports your goals, needs, choices and preferences, we also thoughtfully include Equine-Assisted Therapy as part of your journey.

No horse experience is needed.
Horses naturally model calm breathing, clear communication, and healthy connection.
This helps people to build skills they can use in everyday life.

Every approach we use is guided by what will best support you to meet your goals.
We support growth in areas such as:
• Self-regulation and emotional awareness
• Confidence and resilience
• Communication and relationships
• Boundaries and responsibility
• Independent living and psychosocial skills

We offer a pre-service agreement to support clients and work collaboratively with you, your plan manager and/or support coordinator.

Our practitioners are tertiary-qualified, experienced, insured, and hold long-standing registration with their professional bodies.

Kerryn Mitchell is registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), registration number 467095.
Dean Mighell is registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), registration number 27808.

If you’re looking for a supportive, holistic approach to achieving NDIS Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living - Therapy Support goals, we’d love to connect.

PTSD: An Injury, Not a Disorder.

At Animal Therapies Ltd (ATL), we believe language matters.

Emerging research and military/public safety frameworks increasingly recognise Post-Traumatic Stress as an injury — not a disorder, and not a weakness.

Referring to it as Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI):

• Reduces stigma
• Encourages help-seeking
• Reflects the real neurological and physiological impact of trauma
• Supports recovery-focused conversations

Trauma changes the brain and nervous system. Injuries can heal — with the right support.

Through animal-assisted therapies, ATL is committed to supporting veterans, first responders, and individuals impacted by trauma on their healing journey.

Because healing begins when we change the conversation.

This International Women’s Day 2026 emphasises the power of reciprocity and support.

Sometimes what we give may be something we give to ourselves:
• The willingness to try something new.
• The openness to speak honestly.
• The permission to slow down.
• The courage to ask for support.
• The gentleness of self-compassion or self-care.
• The gift of connection to ourselves, and to others.

In equine-assisted therapy, this is met with calm presence.
In the quiet of nature, alongside horses, women are offered space to reconnect with their inner steadiness.
There is no pressure to be anything other than who you are in that moment.

When women give themselves permission to be seen, supported, and grounded, they may gain something deeply lasting:
• Confidence that feels embodied
• Resilience that feels steady
• A renewed sense of well-being that carries into everyday life.

On this International Women’s Day, and on every other day, we honour the women who continue to show up; gently, bravely, and in their own time, for themselves and for others.
