As the temperature heats up around the country it’s important to ensure people living with dementia remain hydrated.

“If the person is experiencing memory loss then they may be forgetting to drink water even though they're aware that they should be drinking. It's a really big one because dehydration can have an impact on the symptoms of dementia.”

Sandra, an advisor with the National Dementia Helpline, explains that it can be difficult at this time of year to ensure someone you might be caring for is getting enough to drink. She says it’s a question she gets asked often – especially during the summer.

To help combat dehydration or forgetting to drink she suggests using prompts and finding a prompt that works well for the person living with dementia.

“You could have a jug of water out on the bench as a visual cue, and then you can look to see if any of it has been drunk. It works well because you don’t have to keep reminding your loved one to drink water,” she suggests.

“Or you could arrange the fridge so that when the person opens it something stands out - like their favourite drink,” Sandra said.

These are just some strategies that can help over the summer – but they might not work for everyone. For more individualised support and advice call the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500.
