After chatting with so many students at the Allied Health Expo last month, I kept hearing the same question question 🙋🏼‍♀️
‘’What should I actually be doing while I study if I want to work in paediatric speech pathology?’’

So I thought I’d put this together as a simple starting point. Nothing complicated, just a few practical things that can help you feel more confident and connected to the industry while you’re still at uni 📖

You don’t need to do it all. Just start somewhere, stay curious, and keep learning as you go✨

Such a nice way to spend Saturday morning at the coastal coffee walk & connect ☕️

Coffee and a sweet treat from , followed by an easy stroll along the boardwalk. Relaxed and a good reminder to step outside the clinic & connect.
We even enjoyed a free matcha from .official along the way 🫶🏼

How to prioritise as a busy Speechie? 📚

One of my favourite books, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, introduced the Time Management Matrix, and it completely changed how I thought about priorities.

A lot of speechies spend their time in urgent work - last minute reports, urgent emails and problem solving.
But the real growth happens in the important but not urgent space: planning, PD, collaboration, and building systems that support better outcomes. This is where we want to be working from and is the difference between just feeling busy and feeling organised.

At Speak About, this is something we actively build into our team culture. Protecting time for learning, planning and growth so we can perform at our best.
It isn’t about doing more. Its about being intentional with your time ⏱️

Yesterday Alia and I spent the afternoon at the 2026 Allied Health Expo!

There’s something really special about meeting students who are genuinely excited about this profession - asking thoughtful questions, wanting to learn more, and already thinking about the kind of clinicians they want to become. That energy is contagious.
Alia and I pretty much talked non-stop for two hours straight, but honestly we walked away feeling more energised. Full cups and a lot of future speechies to look forward to.
I feel incredibly grateful to be in a position where I get to help create opportunities and pathways for the next generation coming into this industry ✨

Rainy days just make sense for slowing down and picking up a book ☁️📚

There’s something about creating a little reading nook at home (this is honestly my fav spot!). It’s cosy, calm and no pressure - making it that bit easier for kids to sit and connect.
Reading together isn’t just about the book, it’s also one of the simplest ways to support your child’s language development in everyday moments. You don’t need it to be perfect or long🤍

What is a good educational resource I can use at home to support my child’s development?

This is a question I get asked all the time by parents!
Two resources I always recommend are these Busy Books by .speechie

The ‘Let’s Talk Together’ and ‘Talk With Me’ Busy Books are fantastic for building preschool language concepts in children aged 2–4 years. Each book includes fun, interactive activities with instructions and tips to help parents confidently support language at home.

We also love using these in therapy and recommending them to families.
