When a soon-to-be mother has difficulties maintaining their iron status during the later stages of pregnancy, this can increase the likelihood of their baby becoming iron deficient in the first year of life.

Why?
In late pregnancy, mothers share their iron stores with their babies, to support their earthside growth and development. Babies depend on this iron boost, as breastmilk and formula provide limited iron. If maternal iron levels are low, it can impact the baby's iron stores.

What's the solution?
Iron deficiency isn't a simple issue solved by just taking a supplement, especially during pregnancy. Many of us are familiar with how some traditional iron supplements can also cause grumpy guts.

For those facing ongoing iron challenges, seeking guidance from a professional even before conception can help overcome hurdles to maintaining optimal iron levels, as pregnancy can be a difficult time to catch up your iron stores, limiting compliance and of course how they feel.

As throughout pregnancy, your body's need for iron increases by a significant 150%. Iron needs are equivalent to eating 1.2 kg of steak or 3.8 kg of broccoli every day just to maintain levels.

Let’s manage your iron levels naturally through nourishing foods, solving any issues that increase your risk iron deficiency and if required a more tailored iron replenishment approach, to nourish you & your future baby.

ARE YOU CONSUMING ENOUGH CHOLINE?
Choline is gaining attention during the prenatal space due to its crucial role in the development of the baby's brain. While some prenatal supplements are adjusting to include more choline, it's unfortunate that the levels women receive likely still fall short, especially for those who consume limited meats and eggs.

Additionally, recent findings suggest that even the minimum choline requirement might be insufficient, with around double the minimum amount shown to have long-lasting benefits for baby brain development.

A simple and cost-effective solution to increase choline intake is by incorporating more eggs into your day, consider adding a meal with 3-4 eggs, which also provides you with nourishing proteins and fats. There are various ways to eat more eggs- scrambled, poached, egg frittata, egg muffins, shashuka, and pancakes.

If eggs aren't your preference, flip to page 2 to see a list of other choline rich foods! If you're in your prenatal period, we can assess whether youre getting enough, or if an additional supplement might be a suitable option to meet needs of both mother and baby.

I understand that many parents may not be familiar with their child's bowel habits once they're out of diapers. It can be surprising to learn that your little one might be experiencing discomfort passing stools or dealing with constipation.

Constipation can have several effects on a child's body, including their appetite, as they might have an inner feeling of fullness.

Engaging in open conversations with your child about their poo helps them feel at ease and realise that it's a natural part of life.

This kind of communication is not only helpful to promptly address any bathroom concerns they may experience, but it also helps them learn about the impact food, fluid and lifestyle have on their digestion, and encourages your child to develop a sense of body awareness.

Understanding how the tummy works and how food affects bathroom habits is important knowledge. It empowers your child to make healthy choices and keep their tummy happy and comfortable.

You can start by asking your child a few simple questions to learn about their toileting, and discuss any concerns with a paediatric health professional:
💩How often do you do a poo?
💩Does it ever hurt, or do you feel like it's stuck?
💩What does it look like? (You can even look at pictures from the 'Bristol Stool Chart' together to help them understand.)

Post your p**p questions below 💩

There are many reasons why some children may require additional nourishment to support their growth and development.

While it's common to think about providing energy-rich foods, it's crucial to consider that growth involves more than just calories.

A balanced intake of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fats) is essential for promoting healthy growth, instead of just quickly adding fat mass.

Many nutrient-dense foods can effectively support a child's growth. Some of my favourites are:
- olive oil, ghee, flaxseed oil
- fatty fish
- avocado
- organ products
- eggs, and egg yolks
- natural nuts & seed butters.
These foods not only provide energy but also deliver essential nutrients required for healthy growth!

During my studies as a paediatric dietitian, the common recommendations were to incorporate butter, margarine, cream, sugary foods into the diets of slow-growing children. While these suggestions can boost calorie and protein intake, I quickly discovered that these strategies aren’t suitable for most children, or their long term health, as these foods don’t address the full spectrum of nutrients required for healthy growth, and may be counterproductive in many ways.

If your child is experiencing growth-related concerns, our initial step is to identify the underlying causes and look into dietary imbalances, once we have a clear understanding, we can work together to develop individualised strategies that promote sustainable and healthy growth.

Hello, I'm Nicole, but you can call me Nikki. It's about time I make a proper introduction. 👋

I'm a Paediatric Dietitian with a degree in dietetics & nutrition, specialising in the care of infants, children, teenagers, & expectant mothers. My primary focus is to improve the health of our future generations.

My passion is in connecting families with their children's nutritional needs through the use of whole foods & targeted nutrient therapy. I meet families where they are on their health journey, providing support accordingly.

With my foundation as a dietitian, I possess a profound understanding of how to bring a child's body into balance. This knowledge and experience enable me to support both healthy children in need of dietary tweeks for better health and children with complex medical conditions that typically require a deeper level of ongoing care.

I understand that the nourishment our bodies require can be found in whole foods from the natural environment. Therefore, I emphasise the importance of promoting sustainable practices to care for the Earth to ensure the well-being of generations to come.

When I'm not working with families, you'll find me in the beautiful Bundjalung country 🤎 soaking in the sea, basking in the sun, tending to my garden, exploring local markets, cooking, hiking, picnicking or some type of outdoor activitie like surfing, skateboarding, push-biking, or motorcycling, I very much cherish my work life balance.

I offer support to numerous patient presentations, both online & in my office at Tiny Tots Paediatrics in Tugun. From newborns to young adults, I'm here to help them norish 🌿

Thank you for being a part of this journey!
