Understanding Gluteal Tendinopathy: A Common Cause of Hip Pain 🍑

Gluteal tendinopathy is one of the most common sources of lateral hip pain, especially in middle-aged women and active individuals. It involves irritation or degeneration of the gluteus medius and/or minimus tendons where they attach to the greater trochanter of the femur.

🍑Common Symptoms
Patients typically report pain on the outside of the hip, often worsened by lying on the affected side, walking upstairs, standing on one leg, or prolonged sitting. It may mimic or be mistaken for trochanteric bursitis.

🍑How Physiotherapy Helps
Effective management includes education to reduce compressive loads on the tendons, tailored strengthening exercises, and load management. Treatments may also include manual therapy, dry needling, or shockwave therapy, depending on the individual’s presentation.

If you're experiencing persistent hip pain, especially on the outside of your hip, physiotherapy can help you move better, reduce pain, and return to the activities you love 🏃‍♀️

The team are very sad to hear that Bobby Redman has passed away. Bobby has been a client of 6S for many years. She was a wonderful lady who contributed so much. She will be missed. The photo was at an awards night where Bobby nominated Nicole for an award. The below text was shared by Rotary Brisbane Water on the Gosford and Peninsula Neighbourhood Community Alerts Page

Charter Vocational Director
Life Member
Rotary Brisbane Water is greatly saddened to announce the death of our dear friend Bobby Redman.
Bobby was an exceptional woman whose courage, compassion, and dedication to service touched countless lives—on the Central Coast and across Australia.
A Founding Leader
Bobby helped build the foundation of our club. As our Charter Vocational Director, she established our vocational service pillar and created our Pride of Workmanship Award program. Through this initiative, she ensured that hard working Central Coast professionals received the recognition they deserved—a legacy that continues today.
A National Voice for Change
After her diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, Bobby made a courageous choice. Rather than step back from public life, she became one of Australia's most influential dementia advocates.
From 2021 to 2025, Bobby served as Chair of the Dementia Australia Advisory Committee. In this role, she shaped national policy, strengthened support systems, and amplified the voices of 421,000 Australians living with dementia. Her advocacy gave hope and dignity to thousands who might otherwise have remained unheard.
Living with Purpose
Bobby refused to let her diagnosis define her limits. She lived independently on the Central Coast, demonstrating that a life of purpose and contribution doesn't end with dementia—it continues.
She shared her journey openly with our club and the wider community, breaking down stigma one conversation at a time. As a trained psychologist, Bobby brought both professional insight and lived experience to her advocacy. This powerful combination made her voice impossible to ignore.
A Lasting Legacy
Whether leading at the national level, serving on local committees for disability access, or supporting fellow Rotarians, Bobby embodied Rotary's highest ideal: Service Above Self.
She changed lives. She influenced policy. She inspired everyone fortunate enough to know her.

👟 Do You Really Need 10,000 Steps?
Short answer: no.

If you wear a fitness tracker, you’ve probably been told 10,000 steps is the gold standard. Miss it and it feels like your walk didn’t count.
Here’s what the evidence actually says — especially for adults 55+.

🚫 Myth: You must hit 10,000 steps
Research shows meaningful health benefits often appear around 3,000–7,000 steps per day. Even the WHO reminds us: some is better than none.
👉 Better approach:
Find your baseline and add 500–1,000 steps on most days. Simple and sustainable.

🚫 Myth: More steps are always better
Once you’re around 6,000–8,000 steps, how you walk matters more than adding more:
pace, hills, posture, variety.
Chasing numbers can mean sore joints and skipping strength or balance work.

🚫 Myth: Steps = fitness
Steps measure movement, not strength, balance, or confidence — which are crucial for staying independent as we age.
Better signs of progress:
✔ Standing from a chair without hands
✔ Feeling steady on stairs or uneven ground
✔ Comfort carrying shopping
✔ Balance and recovery after walking

🚫 Myth: If steps don’t increase every week, you’re failing
Nope. Bodies aren’t robots.
Weekly totals matter more than daily streaks. An average of ~5,000 steps/day is still excellent progress.

✅ The bottom line
10,000 steps isn’t wrong — it’s just unnecessary for most adults 55+.

Consistent, enjoyable movement + strength and balance work will do far more than chasing a number.

Walking more this year? A brilliant habit to build 👏🏼

But when it comes to keeping your strength as you age, working alone might now tell the whole story. Hear from Exercise Physiologist, Emma, on what she recommend to support strength, mobility and longevity 👆🏼
