Mirena IUD: Your Top Questions Answered. Part 1 of 2 💙

Thinking about the Mirena? Dr Arjun Shah, GP at Mingara Medical, answers the questions women ask most.

The Mirena is a small, T-shaped device that's over 99% effective and lasts up to 8 years. It's fully reversible and contains progesterone.

One of the biggest benefits? It can significantly help with painful or heavy periods - making them much lighter, or stopping them altogether. And no, it doesn't cause weight gain or the side effects of other contraceptive methods.

If you're curious about whether the Mirena is right for you, watch Part 1.

Men's Heart Health - Why You Need a Check-Up 🫀

Dr James Wolstenholme, GP at Mingara Medical for 11 years with a special interest in cardiology, is speaking directly to men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who haven't seen a doctor in years.

Here's the truth: Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in Australian men. But here's the good news - it's largely preventable.

The problem? Men often fall through the cracks. Women tend to visit their doctors regularly, but men? Not so much. And that's dangerous because blood pressure and cholesterol don't cause symptoms in the early stages. You can be at serious risk without knowing it.

The main risk factors we can manage:
✅ Cholesterol
✅ Blood pressure
✅ Diabetes risk
✅ Weight, exercise, smoking, and diet

How do we assess your heart disease risk?
Dr James walks through the process: a chat about your medical and family history, a physical exam (listening to your heart, checking blood pressure), blood tests (cholesterol, kidney function, blood sugar), and sometimes an ECG or coronary artery calcium scan to check if cholesterol is clogging your arteries.

Then we calculate your 10-year cardiovascular risk - your chances of having a heart attack in the next decade. This guides decisions on medication and lifestyle changes.
The bottom line: Heart disease is preventable. If this applies to you, book a check-up. It might literally save your life.

Ask Dr JP: How Does a Vasectomy Work? What Changes & What Doesn't 🩺

One of the most common questions we get: "What actually happens during a vasectomy? What changes? What Doesn't?"

Dr JP breaks it down simply. A vasectomy works by dividing the vas deferens - the small tube that carries s***m. That's it. But here's what surprises most people:
What DOESN'T change:
✅ Hormones - no change
✅ S*x drive - no change
✅ Ej*******on sensation - feels exactly the same
✅ Ej*****te volume - stays the same

What DOES change:
The only difference? The appearance of ej*****te becomes clear instead of white, because there are no s***m present.

Once healed, you won't notice any difference in sensation, pleasure, or function. Life continues exactly as before - just without the risk of pregnancy.

Thinking about vasectomy? It's a personal decision. If you have questions, Dr JP and our team are here to help. Book a confidential consultation today.
