Knee Pain? Try This Gentle Strengthening Exercise

Michael Orford, Principal Physiotherapist at HealthPoint Mingara, demonstrates a simple resistance band exercise that can help ease knee pain and build strength.

With over a decade of experience treating musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, and orthopaedic issues, Michael knows what works. This gentle exercise is one he commonly prescribes to his patients to support knee stability and reduce pain.

What you need:
A resistance loop band (that's it!)

How to do it:
Loop the band around your leg. Slowly straighten your knee by activating your quads (thigh muscles) and gently return back to the starting position. Start with 2 sets of 10-20 repetitions or what feels comfortable - there's no rush.

Why it helps:
Gentle knee strengthening exercises reduce pain, improve stability, and support better movement patterns. This targets the muscles around your knee without overloading the joint itself.

Who is this for?
Anyone experiencing knee pain or looking to strengthen the muscles that support their knees. It's low-impact and can be modified to suit your comfort level.

Thereโ€™s no denying it, as females were the minority a lot of the time in Science - but despite that, weโ€™ve driven some of the biggest breakthroughs in history.

A woman was the first to reveal the structure of DNA.

A woman coinvented the technology behind Wiโ€‘Fi.

A woman developed the malaria treatment thatโ€™s saved millions of lives.

Women have launched satellites, built programming languages, mapped the universe, and transformed medicine - often while being told they didnโ€™t belong.

So if youโ€™re thinking about science, start by following what fascinates you. And if you donโ€™t see a woman in the room yet, thatโ€™s ok. My experience is that the science community embraces ideas on their merit, and your ideas could be the next breakthrough the world is waiting for.
