One of the greatest challenges of our time,
..is being able to handle the huge amount of stimuli we’re exposed to each day AND at the same time maintain a breathing pattern that is rhythmic and relaxed.

During stressful periods, we take more breaths or breathe at a rhythm that is unnatural.

Over time, this can cause imbalances in the body's ability to self-regulate.

How lessons from the deep can help us reach higher heights and perform under pressure 👇

1. Big lungs 💨

3. Strong diving reflex 🐬

These three adaptations help you deal with a complete cessation of breathing for a few minutes.

But do they have any relevance to prolonged exposure to a mild decrease in oxygen, like you experience in the mountains?

Can this explain how our abilities for breath-hold diving and high altitude climbing are related?

Turns out - it does.

We absolutely love data like this - we live for it. I remember reading a report from a study on winter swimmers in London, where the researchers had found a 'strange side note' - and getting so damn excited for it;

- Not only were the swimmers healthier and happier for their hobby - they also performed better at altitude. (even though all their cold exposure took place at sea level)

This speaks to the idea of what we call Cross-adaptation - and it informs a lot of our practices. The application means that to train for one area of adaptation, will also increase performance in other areas.

When we stress ourselves in the right ways, we become stronger as a whole. Physiologically, physically, but also mentally and are I say spiritually more adapted humans.

The bigger takeaway, for us, is the idea that freediving isn’t as crazy and unnatural a pastime as most initially think.

The dive reflex and adaptations that happen when people learn to hold their breath originate way back in our evolutionary history—it’s what Per Scholander, one of the first scientists to study this, called “the master switch of life.”

And as the research shows, the circuitry that enables us to go deep is also what enables us to make it to the top of Mount Everest.

—because we were simply born to dive, and when chasing our evolutionary potential - we have no option but to thrive.

When to use Breathwork?

The principal effect of Breathwork is inner balance, emotional realignment and the reduction of cortisol, accompanied by a lowered heart rate and soothing of nerves.

Here are some recommended moments to use Breathwork to maintain this state throughout the day:

1️⃣ Upon waking 5-7AM

Breathe before your coffee, breakfast or checking your phone 📱

Cortisol levels peak in the morning, helping us face the stress of the day. Too much cortisol is like too much coffee. There’s a happy medium.

It takes around 4 hours for cortisol to return to normal levels after a bout of stress. Breathwork in the morning reduces the starting level and will speed up the return to normal.

The morning session is therefore by far the most important one as it sets you up for success.

2️⃣ Before lunch 11 - 1 PM

Mornings are active periods, the SNS / PNS balance leans to the left. A rebalancing via breathwork is going to have a calming effect, as you:

- Re-center yourself
- Alleviate built up stress
- Prepare for digestion
- Avoid post-meal drowsiness

In addition, the PNS stimulation improves digestion, which takes the backburner when the pressures of the day creep up on us.

3️⃣ Late afternoon 5-7PM

For most, this time is a change in rhythm; the work or study day ends, and we come home to our ‘second life’, with its unique stressors and tasks.

This session can be the most difficult to honour but ensuring you take a breather before shifting gears can make all the difference.

This time is as critical as the morning one, the quality of your evening and sleep depend on it.
