Strength training is so important for women as we age! Research shows that we lose significant muscle mass during menopause. There’s only one way to regain that muscle mass.. use it or lose it!!

Studies show that women may lose up to 1–1.5 per cent of muscle mass per year during menopause, with a concurrent increase in visceral adiposity.

To round out Jean Hailes for Women's Health Week, Sarah Myles, Rebecca Tapiolas, Kathy Jennings and Lauren Neill of the APA Women’s, Men’s and Pelvic Health national group present five discussion points about the physical and mental effects of menopause and the support physiotherapists can provide.

Pilates has so many forms and variations, we never run out of ideas in the studio! We often include a few mat exercises in a class. Using your own body weight as resistance is very effective and we like to encourage our clients to practice at home between sessions. Mat exercises are a great way to work out in your own time if you can't get to class, or to bridge the gap between classes. Here we have the side plank, which is great for improving shoulder strength, weight bearing through the arm bones for bone health, and activating the obliques and core.

Needling specific points on the abdomen is a safe, effective way to manage the symptoms of menopause, such as night sweats, mood swings, hot flushes, joint aches and sleep disturbance. Research is looking really promising, which is great news for women who are unable, or choose not to take hormone replacement therapy. We're so thrilled our womens health physio Melli is experienced in needling and has recently learnt the technique for addressing menopause symptoms. Regular exercise improves sleep quality, mood, bone and muscle strength, blood flow, flexibility and joint pain. It also mitigates the tendency to gain weight at this time of life. Meet the team: Melli!
Melli is our pelvic floor expert. Whilst we all love to treat women for a range of issues, including joint pain, pregnancy/post natal support and building strength to improve bone density, Melli has specific expertise in treating pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic organ prolapse, overactive or weak pelvic floor, and bladder dysfunction. Melli is also trained in dry needling for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including menopause related pain. And if you've been to one of her Pilates groups, you will know she is a hard task master, keeping you accountable to your movement goals!
