Diet culture is successful at something - spreading harmful information, normalising and reinforcing unhealthy eating behaviours.
It is not successful at supporting people to enjoy the taste of different food.
It is not successful at inspiring people to listen to their hunger/satiety (fullness) cues.
It is not successful at educating people to fuel their body in a way that meets their needs.
It is not successful at encouraging people when eating to value the many attributes of the experience.
It is not successful at respecting the dynamic nature of our food choices and our eating patterns.

So, what is healthy eating?
It is eating regularly to support an effective metabolism, normalise hunger and fullness signals, optimise digestive movements, and stabilise blood sugar levels.
It is eating adequately to meet individual nutritional and energy requirement – this is different for everyone, and is dependent on many factors.
It is eating a variety of foods for enjoyment purposes (with no negative thoughts or feelings).
It is allowing food to be enjoyed with others and in a variety of places and circumstances.
It is encouraging people to engage with their body’s intuition that supports spontaneity and flexible eating.

Do not let diet culture win! Share this post to show others what true healthy eating looks like.

Helpful hints this Christmas.

Pressure - Sometimes, the well-intentioned nudges to eat food can make eating feel overwhelming for children.

It could be the feeling of…
💥 Everyone is looking at me!
💥 Mum and Dad expect me to eat this!
💥 I ate this last time, will they expect me to eat it again?
💥 I feel stressed because I don’t know if I can eat what my parents want me to
💥 I don’t feel like I am a good eater

There are many forms of pressure that we like to consider. We work with parents and caregivers to identify sources of pressure that may be interfering with your child’s eating.

Eat happy! ❤

Why won’t Paul Rudd look like Chris Hemsworth?
Last week actor Paul Rudd spoke about his “horrible” and “very restrictive” diet when prepping for his role as ‘Scott Lang/Ant-Man’ in the Marvel movies.
Rudd went on to discuss how he was “killing” himself (with diet & exercise), yet he knew he would never look like his co-star, Chris Hemsworth ‘Thor’, because Ant-Man isn’t Thor.

Even if Rudd and Hemsworth had the same diet and exercise routine, they still wouldn’t look the same because there are many factors (most of which are out of our control) that makes us look different.
Genetics, our stage of life, where and how we grew up, the access, availability, utilisation and stability of food, education, healthcare, safe areas to exercise (e.g. parks, walking tracks) all play a role in why we won’t ever look like Chris Hemsworth or Paul Rudd or any other celebrity.

I am really excited & honoured to be listed as a Finalist in the 2023 Allied Health Awards for the ‘Dietitian of the year’ category.

It would not be without the mountain of people, friends, family & colleagues who have always supported me (or worked alongside me) with the vision to bring respectful & inclusive care into the field of nutrition & dietetics.

Equally as important, it would not be without the many resilient & brave clients I have worked with over the years who have trusted to come under my care as a Dietitian, whether that be in recovery from an eating disorder, intuitive eating counselling, body image support, non-diet nutrition education or size inclusive health.

Thank you to my sister, for nominating me for this award 🫶

How wonderful to be listed as a Finalist alongside so many of my esteemed colleagues. What is so awesome about this profession is how we are so often learning from each other. I have been able to make so many connections, even with specialities & passions in entirely separate areas to others. Dietitians supporting Dietitians, now I’m here for that!!! & just a friendly reminder, whether awards or no awards, if you’re here & you’re a Dietitian, the work you’re doing is so dang important, I see you, keep doin’ it 💛
