Sunday musings … parallels between Business and Health in the online world.
This weekend I’ve been doing some work with my business mentor Tash Corbin, and one of the conversations was around the noise in the online marketing world from businesses using fear-based tactics to convince you to follow/join/buy their thing.
There is so much of this in the online health world as well!
So when everyone’s telling you THEY have the secret to fixing all your problems, how do you know who to believe?
- firstly, I’d say trust how you feel - I know there’s a lot of marketing tactics out there that make me feel particularly icky. That’s a good sign to avoid them.
- look for the people who are generous with their knowledge and experience, and who don’t lock all the ‘good bits’ up in secret, proprietary (and usually $$$) program
- watch for content that makes you feel worse - that makes you worried/scared (if I’m not taking this supplement, or doing this exercise, or having daily ice baths I must not care about my health) or content that tells you you’re doing something wrong (the way you’re eating is wrong for your age, you’re drinking the wrong water, you’re fasting at the wrong time, you’re taking the wrong supplements etc)
- and most importantly- watch for anything that has no consideration for individuality. In the health world, our uniqueness is EVERYTHING. There is no one-size-fits-all, there is no ‘it worked for me so it WILL work for you’ (and if it doesn’t it’s your fault) and there is no magic bullet.
My best advice? Experiment with ideas, practices, practitioners and modalities - choose the things that RESONATE with you, avoid the things that make you feel guilty/weak/powerless. Health is a journey, it will continue to change over the course of your life, and you’ll walk that journey with many different guides along the way.
Here’s to choosing your own path to wellness - a path free from fear or guilt.
Happy Sunday everyone! 🌿
