➰The Pelvic Outlet➰

The pelvic outlet is the lower circumference of the pelvis. It’s the last space through which the baby’s head must mold and adjust through to come out during birth.

The pelvis is not a fixed bone. It is a set of bones joined together with many ligaments which are stretched out during the pregnancy due to the hormone relaxin to prepare for birth. This is the reason all those pelvic aches and pains are felt especially in the last trimester. So the pelvis naturally gets a bit bigger than it’s original size during pregnancy.😱

As the pelvis is flexible, it can open, close, stretch out, twist and flex by our body and hip movements during labor. This is very important to help a malpositioned baby come into position as well as to help any baby move down through the pelvis. 👍🏼

With such a resourceful and flexible part of the skeleton at our disposal, why don’t we use it to the best of our abilities?
🤨🤨🤨

Moving around during labor and trying different positions helps the baby move down through the pelvis with more ease and in lesser time. Who doesn’t want a shorter labor?😅😅😅

When we are in upright positions like standing, sitting, kneeling or squatting, the pelvic outlet is opened up to its maximum circumference giving the baby’s head the most space to come out. Which means a baby with a slightly bigger head can also be birthed easily. 💯😱

The same pelvis when lying down on the back is compressed down due to gravity which reduces the circumference of the outlet considerably. In this case even a normal sized baby would have trouble coming out and may require assistance. 😥😐

Think about it? Which scenario would be more beneficial to a laboring mom?🧐
Staying upright with a possibly shorter labor or lying down with a possible prolonged labor and trouble pushing the baby out?🤨

❗️Positions matter during labor❗️

Great advice

What are the best questions to ask if you're offered induction of labour?

As a midwife who has researched and written about induction of labour for more than two decades, I get asked that quite a bit.

Especially as I have a fundamental belief that there is no one 'right' path for everyone.

Twenty years before anyone hashtagged , I was promoting that very idea to women and families.

One size doesn't fit all.

You need to decide what's right for you.

And in order to do that, you might need to ask some questions.

So I have put together this guide to the five best questions that you can ask in order to get more information and make the decisions that are right for you.

I'm also going to tell you what can you learn from the answers you are given.

You can find my blog post at https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/five-questions-to-ask-if-youre-offered-induction-of-labour/

There's a link to my website in my bio as well.

I hope you'll find it useful.

Informed consent never looks or sounds like something already in motion. Huge red flag. True informed consent takes hold of the concepts of a conversation. One that explains risks and benefits, leaves room for questions and time to consider, and then the decision is up to the client. With the choice of No being a full one.
What have you experienced?

Just one glass of wine a week during pregnancy has been linked to permanent changes in a child's facial features – and possibly their cognitive abilities too.

Several of you have mentioned that this doesn’t apply to you because baby likes to keep a hand on the breast either way. Note: look at what baby is doing with his/her hand. Making a fist = hungry baby. Open, relaxed hand = full.

If you’re a mom, then you definitely remember the early days of being a parent when you would do anything to feel human again. Before kids, we tend to take things like having a hot shower and leisurely sipping on a cup of coffee for granted. When you’re dealing with a new baby, you pretty […]

🤰🏻 An EXCELLENT photo by showing both sides of the placenta.
The placenta is a temporary organ that connects the developing fetus via the umbilical cord to the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, thermo-regulation, waste elimination, and gas exchange via the mother's blood supply; to fight against internal infection; and to produce hormones which support pregnancy.......WOW!🤰🏻

🌟💕 How brilliant is this image from it’s so informative when visualising the umbilical cord and the vessels inside. 💕🌟
~
The umbilical cord contains Wharton's jelly, a gelatinous substance made largely from mucopolysaccharides which protects the blood vessels inside. It contains one vein, which carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the fetus, and two arteries that carry deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood away.
