Growing interest, awareness, and understanding around perimenopause is so positive and helpful for women, myself included!
Perimenopause is a profound stage of hormonal transition for women, and has been described as a time of great hormonal instability & vulnerability.
It is often referred to as ‘the second puberty’, and in previous generations may have been mistaken for a ‘nervous breakdown’!
Perimenopause refers to the hormonal & physiological shifts that happen leading up to menopause. These changes can span about 10 years for most individuals, but can also begin in a woman’s late 30’s.
Early, subtle shifts in s*x hormones can have a profound impact on de-stabilising hormonal, neurological, and mental health, and contribute to symptoms such as heavy periods, flooding, fibroid growth, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. These changes can come on quickly and unexpectedly.
Here I explain 4 key changes that can occur, to a greater or lesser degree. I often explain these to patients, and it can be very relieving & helpful to understand what is driving some of their symptoms.

A recent case of mild shingles affecting the right thorax resolved promptly with naturopathic treatment.
Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella zoster) and involves a painful rash, usually on one side of the body. This rash initially started as a couple of very itchy spots around the right shoulder blade, that slowly became small clusters of painful vesicles. It spread to the right shoulder, underarm, and chest.
Naturopathic treatment included immune enhancing herbs like echinacea root & andrographis , and key anti-viral herbs. Topical antiviral herbs were applied to the rash in a compounded cream, which provided immediate relief from the itch.
No other paracetamol or anti viral medication was needed.
Key anti viral herbs used were-
* St johns wort- A key action of St Johns Wort is antiviral, and it is indicated internally for enveloped viruses like herpes zoster & herpes simplex (cold sore virus). It is traditionally used for neuralgia (nerve pain), so perfectly designed for shingles.
* Thuja- Anti viral, both internally and for external application for viral and fungal skin infection.
* Lemon Balm- indicated topically for herpes infections.

As some of you may know, private health insurance rebates for naturopathy will soon be reinstated!
I am delighted by this historic update! The decision was announced on the 14th April by the Minister for Health after the formal acceptance of outcomes from the Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel report.
A number of years ago, after clients had benefited for many years from private health cover for Naturopathy, it was then determined as not having adequate scientific evidence to support its inclusion in private health insurance products. As such, the government banned it, effectively removing people’s choice & ability to use their private health insurance cover for naturopathic healthcare.
Natural therapy associations will now work closely with health funds & governments agencies to begin the process of implementing these changes to enable inclusion of Naturopathy cover with individual private health insurers.
I will keep all clients updated as these changes occur.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common & debilitating nutritional deficiencies for women that I see almost on a weekly basis.
It is defined as a decrease in the total content of iron in the body, and reflected by low serum ferritin & often low serum iron on a blood test. Iron deficiency leaves women feeling exhausted, flat, & depleted. Dizziness & breathlessness can also occur.
Common reasons for iron deficiency include-
* Insufficient daily intake of protein & iron rich foods, especially muscle meats (beef, lamb, chicken), which contain highly bioavailable iron with 20-25% absorption.
* Inadequate gut absorption of iron, especially due to loose stools or diarrhoea.
* Long term intake of PPI’s or antacids, as they reduce hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach required for conversion of dietary iron into a form suitable for absorption in the small intestine.
* Pregnancy- especially in the second & third trimester, due to increase in mums blood volume & demands of the developing baby
* Increased requirements in teenage girls (& children)
* Loss of blood - especially heavy menstrual loss (menorrhagia) which commonly happens in women with fibroids & in peri menopause, where periods get heavier because of the effect of un-opposed oestrogen on the endometrial lining.
Assessing dietary intake of iron & reviewing iron studies is a routine part of my health check for women.
Women often require low iron supplementation for a period of time to replenish iron stores and feel better. I feel that it’s important to diagnose & treat iron deficiency with diet & supplementation early, before the development of iron deficiency anaemia but also before the need for an iron infusion. That way you can build iron status & stores gently & work with the natural mechanisms of the body which tightly regulate iron absorption.

Slow cooker chicken shawarma
This chicken curry is so beautiful & so easy to make. I have found freshly ground cumin seeds (blitz in a blender to a powder) elevates this curry to a whole new level of flavour. I also serve it with organic greek yoghurt mixed with freshly ground cumin seed.
Great for busy mums & families- prep, set, forget! But also excellent for older women cooking for one as it yields a few meals from one batch, and is a good source of protein & heme iron, the intake of which is often low for many women of all ages that I see in practice.
I use organic or free range/ antibiotic free chicken thigh fillets for this recipe which are higher in heme iron than chicken breast.
Cumin spiced yoghurt
2 tblspns greek yoghurt ( or sheep yoghurt/ coconut greek yoghurt)
2 heaped tspns freshly ground cumin seeds (the flavour is amazing!).
METHOD
Heat slow cooker to High.
Trim off excess fat & cut each thigh into thirds. Pop into bowl of slow cooker.
Heat olive oil in frying pan on high heat. Cook onion & garlic until soft & golden.
Add spices & cook for a minute until fragrant.
Add 2 tblspns water, stir, & remove any stuck-on bits. Remove from heat.
Stir through yoghurt (or coconut cream/ oat cream) & lemon.
Add sauce to slow cooker bowl & coat chicken thighs.
Cover & cook for 3-4 hours, stirring once throughout.
Serve with brown rice, steamed veggies, coriander & cumin spiced yoghurt.

Primary dysmenorrhea is the most common type of period pain experienced by women.
It occurs when uterine contractions are too strong & occur too frequently, preventing the uterus from relaxing properly and reducing the amount of blood flow through the uterine muscle, causing pain.
This is driven by pro inflammatory & pro spasmolytic prostaglandins like PGE2 & PGF2alpha, and hormonal imbalances.
Naturopathic tools honour the innate healing capacity of the body, and help to relieve pain, dial down inflammation, and helps women to reduce & replace NSAIDs and analgesic use.

Do you need to consider a more natural & effective approach to your menstrual or reproductive pain?
As a naturopath with two daughters, natural pain solutions for menstrual & reproductive health have become top priority for me, both in family life & in clinical practice.
I recently attended a Metagenics seminar ‘Exploring Complexities of Women’s Pain’ in dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, and migraines at UTS in Sydney.
Research shows that 40% of all women are affected by pain relating to their reproductive & hormonal health, and that 86% of women don’t consult a health care provider seeking help for their period pain. They suffer through it or rely on synthetic analgesia to get relief.
As women we are more susceptible to pain because of our female physiology- we have more nerves, hormonal fluctuations, more innate, adaptive, and inflammatory immune responses, more pelvic immunity - all designed to facilitate pregnancy & the growth of another human being. We are wonderfully made!
Current research now suggests that chronic or recurrent pain requires aggressive & early treatment to avoid pain being hardwired neurologically which leads to poor psychosocial outcomes. Naturopaths are well placed to offer effective natural tools in helping to prevent & break the cycle of chronic & recurrent female pain.

Naturopathic management of chickenpox
Our family recently experienced an outbreak of chickenpox! I do apologise for the very un-glamorous photos, but it does help to give you an idea of what the lesions look like. Although once considered a common infectious childhood disease caused by the varicella zoster virus, and in my humble opinion, an important childhood infection, it is rare for children to get chickenpox nowadays. The illness is often more severe in adults compared to children, & adults often require hospitalisation.
Interestingly my husband did have chickenpox as a child, and he was the only one who miraculously did not get it. A chickenpox infection gives an individual life long, naturally acquired immunity, and it is very rare to get the disease a second time! This has profound benefits. If a breastfeeding mother has had chickenpox as a child, then some of the chickenpox antibodies will be passed through the breastmilk to baby. However if the mother has not had chicken pox, the baby will not receive this protection. In contrast, protection from vaccine acquired immunity wanes over time.
Naturopathic medicine offered some unique benefits for treatment of chickenpox:
🌿 Lymphadenopathy- I experienced very swollen, enlarged, and tender lymph glands under my jaw & behind my ears (as shown in the photo). Poke root & Baptisia were taken internally, as they are lymphatic & immune enhancing, and are indicated for acute infection involving enlarged, swollen lymph glands.
🌿 Infected lesions- secondary bacterial infection of some lesions can occurs as a complication of varicella. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common bacteria involved, and can lead to the need for antibiotics. Swollen, red, pus filled lesions were successfully treated with a topical antiseptic tincture of Golden seal, Calendula, and Myrrh. An internal antiseptic mix was also used in addition to the topical for internal antimicrobial action for family members with severe cases.
All members recovered well, and there was no need for antibiotics.
A good result plus bonus life long immunity.
