April is National Pet Month 🐾
At VSS, we see just how strong the bond is between pets and their people - especially when extra care and expertise are needed.
While general wellness is an important foundation, our role is to support pets requiring more advanced diagnostics and specialised treatment. From detailed imaging like CT scans and ultrasound, to ophthalmology services and brachycephalic care, we’re here when your pet needs a deeper level of investigation and support.
National Pet Month is a chance to celebrate every stage of your pet’s journey, and to recognise that when challenges arise, you’re not alone. Our team works closely with your primary vet to help provide answers, clarity and the highest level of care.
Here’s to the pets who mean everything and the dedicated people who support them.

🐾 Rika’s Story: From Critical to Recovery 🐾
We’ve just published a new patient story on our website, sharing the incredible journey of Rika - a much-loved dog who presented to Animal Emergency Service Jindalee with sudden wobbliness, severe panting and profound lethargy.

What unfolded was a rapidly evolving medical emergency. Initial testing revealed changes highly suggestive of Red‑bellied Black snake envenomation. Despite early treatment, Rika’s condition deteriorated quickly. She became fully recumbent, lost her gag reflex and showed signs of neurological depression and possible acute kidney injury.

Given the seriousness of her condition, Rika was transferred to our VSS Jindalee team for intensive, round‑the‑clock care. There, she received oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, urinary catheterisation and close monitoring by our critical care team.

After four days of intensive support, Rika made an extraordinary turnaround - and was finally able to return home to her relieved and very happy family. This case is a powerful reminder of how vital early recognition, rapid action and seamless collaboration between emergency and specialist teams can be.

🐍 Although peak snake season is easing, warmer days mean the risk remains. Staying alert to unusual signs in your pets can make all the difference.

✨ Read the full story on our blog and follow Rika’s journey from crisis to recovery.

Did you know that VSS offers laparoscopic (keyhole) desexing procedures?
This minimally invasive technique is performed by our experienced surgical team. In this case, the procedure was carried out by our surgical resident, Dr Mitchell Graham at VSS Carrara.
Laparoscopic desexing uses small incisions, along with specialised instruments and a camera, to access the abdominal cavity.
Rudy, a Hungarian Vizsla puppy, recently underwent a laparoscopic ovariectomy, where her ovaries were removed using this keyhole approach.
Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, Rudy recovered quickly and was able to go home the very same day. Keyhole surgery is associated with less post-operative pain and faster recovery times for patients.
VSS offers fixed pricing for this procedure, with laparoscopic desexing available for $1800.

For more information visit the Fixed price Surgery section of our website at www.vss.net.au 🔗

This month, we celebrate something truly special; not just milestones in years, but the incredible people behind them.
A huge congratulations to Dr Gordon Corfield, Specialist Surgeon, for an outstanding 18 years with VSS and to Dr Peter Barron, Internal Medicine Specialist, for 13 remarkable years with VSS. These achievements represent far more than time served; they reflect unwavering dedication, compassion and an enduring commitment to excellence in patient care.
Over the years, both Dr Corfield and Dr Barron have made extraordinary contributions - not only through their clinical expertise, but through the way they show up every single day. Their professionalism, leadership and genuine care for patients and colleagues alike have helped shape the very foundation of our team.
What truly sets them apart is the culture they’ve helped build. Their positivity, support and sense of humour have created an environment where people feel valued, motivated and proud to be part of something bigger. The morale and atmosphere within the team today is a direct reflection of the standards they uphold and the example they set.
They’ve mentored, guided and inspired so many along the way, leaving a lasting impact that goes well beyond their individual roles. It’s this kind of legacy that defines a great team and we are incredibly fortunate to have them both as part of ours.
Thank you, Dr Corfield and Dr Barron, for your years of dedication, your leadership and the energy you bring to our workplace. Here’s to celebrating everything you’ve achieved and looking forward to many more successful years ahead!

Otto, a 6-year-old Miniature Schnauzer, continues his second CHOP chemotherapy protocol under the care of Dr Natasha Alexander for relapsed multicentric large cell lymphoma. Otto was originally diagnosed in November 2024, before unfortunately relapsing six months after finishing his first CHOP protocol.
We always love seeing Otto come in, especially alongside his emotional support friend, Abby - both Schnauzers bring such a calm and positive presence to each visit, making his treatments that little bit brighter for everyone involved.
Since his most recent visit (week 16), Otto has been doing very well at home. He remains bright, active and comfortable, even enjoying a long walk over the weekend without issue. His appetite, thirst, toileting and energy levels are all normal, and there have been no gastrointestinal or respiratory concerns reported.
On examination, Otto continues to look clinically well with stable vital parameters. His peripheral lymph nodes remain within normal limits, consistent with ongoing good disease control. His known low-grade heart murmur and arrhythmia are stable and being managed with sotalol with our colleagues at VCA.
Bloodwork on the day confirmed adequate neutrophil and platelet counts, allowing chemotherapy to proceed as planned. He received vincristine intravenously without complication, along with anti-nausea support (maropitant), and continues to have ondansetron available at home if needed.
Overall, Otto is tolerating chemotherapy exceptionally well and remains in complete remission. The plan is to recheck his bloodwork in one week and continue with the next stage of his protocol (cyclophosphamide) if appropriate.

We’ve loved spreading a little Easter cheer this week 🐣💛
Together with our friends at Animal Emergency Service , we shared some Easter treats to some of our wonderful referring clinics as a small thank you for the care and trust they show our patients every day.
We’re also planning to make our way around to all our referring clinics over the coming weeks to say hello, catch up in person and drop off some VSS goodies.
We’re so grateful to work alongside such an incredible network of vets. Every referral, collaboration and shared case truly means the world to us.
From all of us at VSS and AES, thank you for everything you do, and wishing you all a very happy and safe Easter!

🐣Happy Easter from Veterinary Specialist Services🐣
From our entire team across VSS, we want to wish all of our patients, clients, referring vets and the wider veterinary community a very happy and safe Easter.
Whether you’re spending the long weekend with family, friends or pets, we hope it’s filled with rest, joy and plenty of chocolate (for the humans only, of course!) 🐰🍫
Our vet specialist team has been getting into the holiday spirit with a fun Easter scavenger hunt around our clinics 🐾🥚
While we’re celebrating, it’s also a good time to remember that chocolate and pets don’t mix. 🍫❌ Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats, so please keep all Easter treats safely out of reach. If you think your pet may have eaten chocolate or grapes, don’t wait - contact your vet right away. If your vet is not open, please head straight to your nearest VSS hospita, where our colleagues at Animal Emergency Service are available 24/7 (including public holidays) for all emergencies.
To our incredible referrers, thank you for your ongoing trust and collaboration. To our clients, thank you for allowing us to care for your beloved pets. And to our patients, you’re the reason we do what we do every single day. We’re grateful for each and every one of you. Wishing you a wonderful Easter break from all of us at VSS 🐾💐
