Maisie’s IMTP Journey
Maisie Nelson was referred to VSS Carrara critically unwell with severe immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP) - a dangerous autoimmune condition where the body destroys its own platelets, placing patients at high risk of spontaneous bleeding.
Her condition required multiple blood transfusions, intensive immunosuppressive therapy, and continuous monitoring in our ICU. With careful management, Maisie slowly stabilised. Her platelet count improved, her bleeding risk reduced, and her personality returned to normal again.
Today, Maisie is back home with her family, exactly where she should be. Her recovery reflects her own resilience and the commitment of her family, primary care veterinarian and the VSS team working together seamlessly.
As the longest-standing referral centre in the region, we are honoured to support our community and collaborate closely with primary care veterinarians to provide advanced, compassionate care, and to get our patients home to their families, where they belong. Welcome home, Maisie.

🎤 2026 VSS Conference: Speaker Spotlight - Dr David Cook.
When a dog presents with stiffness, lameness or slowing down, it’s easy to assume arthritis is the culprit; but the real story is often far more complex.

At the 2026 VSS Conference, Dr David Cook will be diving into one of the most common - and misunderstood - presentations in general practice, with his session:
“Do they all really just have arthritis? Subtle orthopaedic and neurological conditions in general practice.”

Dr David Cook (BVSc FANZCVS BCom GAICD) is a Specialist Small Animal Surgeon and Managing Partner at VSS. He graduated from The University of Queensland in 2005 with degrees in Veterinary Science and Commerce, later completing an Internship and Residency at VSS. After gaining experience in both general and referral surgical practice in the UK, he achieved Fellowship in Small Animal Surgery in 2015.
He enjoys a broad surgical caseload, with particular interests in orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery and minimally invasive procedures. His special interest area is arthroscopic joint surgery, using keyhole techniques to diagnose and treat conditions such as cruciate ligament disease, elbow dysplasia and shoulder disorders.

In this talk, Dr Cook will unpack the nuanced clinical signs that can easily be missed in a busy consult room, explore how to differentiate between orthopaedic and neurological causes of mobility issues, and share practical approaches for early detection and referral.
Why this talk matters:
- Many mobility concerns in pets are multifactorial and early recognition changes outcomes.
- Subtle gait changes, pain responses and behavioural clues can point to conditions far more serious than arthritis.
- Dr Cook’s insights will help family vets feel more confident in identifying red flags, refining diagnostic pathways and advocating for timely intervention.

If you see mobility cases in your clinic - as every vet does - this is a session you won’t want to miss. Join us at the 2026 VSS Conference as we learn, connect and elevate the standard of care together.

05/01/2026

Knee issues are one of the most common reasons dogs struggle with pain and mobility. Getting the right treatment early can make a big difference to their long‑term comfort.
At VSS, we regularly perform two procedures in particular:
🦴 TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery: Used to stabilise the knee after a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture - the canine equivalent of a torn ACL. This procedure aims to restore stability, reduce pain and support long‑term joint function.
🦴 Patella stabilisation surgery: Recommended when a dog’s kneecap slips or “luxates”, which can lead to lameness, discomfort and ongoing joint wear. Stabilising the patella helps pets move more comfortably and confidently.
These surgeries are carried out by our surgical team using modern techniques and tailored care plans designed around each patient’s needs. Our focus is always on comfort, recovery and long‑term mobility.
To make planning for treatment easier, VSS now offers fixed‑price packages for both TPLO and patella stabilisation surgeries. These packages include clear, predictable costs; no hidden fees; and support from our team throughout the process.
We’re here to help pets get back to moving well and enjoying life again.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Zanthe! 🎂
This year, Zanthe’s birthday didn’t quite look like the party she had planned. Instead of cake and zoomies, she spent her special day with the VSS Jindalee team undergoing a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) - a surgery performed to help stabilise her knee and get her back to comfortable, confident movement.
While it wasn’t the birthday celebration she was expecting, Zanthe was showered with love from our entire team.
We’re happy to share that Zanthe is now back home recovering comfortably, enjoying some well-earned rest and receiving plenty of belated birthday treats.
At VSS, all our Gold Coast and Brisbane hospitals offer streamlined, fixed pricing for TPLO surgery, along with an easy online and phone booking system - making advanced orthopaedic care more accessible when your pet needs it most.
Get well soon, birthday girl - we can’t wait to see you back on all four paws. 🐾

This month, Teddy reaches the 2-year mark since his diagnosis of stage V B-cell large cell lymphoma! This is a remarkable achievement, as the average survival time is 1 year with chemotherapy and only 6-8 weeks without chemotherapy. Teddy underwent his first CHOP protocol and remained in remission for 7 months after completion. A second CHOP protocol was started when he relapsed, and he remains in remission following its completion 5 months ago.
Teddy is always a delight to have in clinic at VSS Carrara and has developed a cheeky habit of barking at us for treats, because he knows we can't say no to him! Teddy continues to come in regularly for a check-up and blood test.
