PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM THE FLU is especially important during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

The flu is caused by the influenza virus. There are many different strains and they can change every year. Flu is not the same as a common cold. The flu is a serious disease because it can lead to serious medical conditions and may result in death. The flu is easily spread from person to person with most infections happening in winter.

Peak Flu season usually occurs from June to September. Optimal protection against influenza occurs within the first three to four months following vaccination. Vaccinating from April provides protection before the peak season.

In 2020, influenza vaccines funded through the National Immunisation Program are available to the following groups (this is due to their increased risk of complications from influenza):

• All people aged 6 months to less than 5 years (newly eligible in 2020)
• All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
• Pregnant women (during any stage of pregnancy)
• All people aged 65 years and over
• People aged 6 months and over with medical conditions which increase the risk of influenza disease complications.

With COVID-19 spreading across Australia, this year it is more important than ever for everyone 6 months of age and above to receive their flu vaccination early.

⚠️UPDATED HEALTH ADVICE⚠️ Testing criteria for coronavirus (COVID-19) will be increased in Cairns, Gold Coast and Brisbane as a precaution following the detection of cases with unknown sources of infection. The increased testing has been ordered to head off the risk of sustained community transmission.

If people in these cities present at GP clinics or fever clinics with acute respiratory symptoms—cough, sore throat, shortness of breath—and the cause cannot be determined, they will be tested for COVID-19.

For the rest of Queensland, testing for the time being will continue to be people who have symptoms and have returned from overseas in the past 14 days (including from cruise ships) or those who have been in contact with a confirmed case, or are health care workers.

For more information on testing criteria, visit: www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/take-action/testing-and-fever-clinics

By now you've probably heard people talking about flattening the curve, so we created this short video to show you what this means for Queenslanders 🙌

When you take action to help slow the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), you are taking steps to reduce the peak of the outbreak which could mean limiting the impact on our healthcare system.

Queenslanders are already doing a great job in helping to slow the spread of the virus, keep up the great work and help us to .https://www.facebook.com/217333648374725/posts/2861728657268531/

Testing for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is only available for people who are feeling unwell AND have travelled overseas in the past 14 days OR have had contact with a confirmed case of the virus.

If you haven’t been overseas or been in contact with a confirmed case, you will not be tested for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) because it is more likely you have another virus such as a cold or influenza.

Just as with any virus, our recommendation is that you stay home if you're feeling unwell, contact your doctor or call 000 in an emergency.
