Its International Day of the Girl Child!
International Day of the Girl Child is an observance day declared by the United Nations to amplify the voices of young girls around the world and increase awareness of issues faced by them.
The observation supports more opportunities for girls and increases awareness about gender equality faced by girls based on their gender.
The equality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination.
The day also "reflects the successful emergence of girls and young women as a distinct cohort in development policy, programming, campaigning, and research.
Theme
The theme for this year's International Day of the Girl is 'Digital generation, Our generation'. It focuses on the gender digital divide in connectivity, devices, and their use, skills, and jobs.
The UN says, "It is an inequity and exclusion gap across geographies and generations that is our challenge to address if the digital revolution is to be for all, with all, by all. Girls know their digital realities and the solutions they need to excel on their diverse pathways as technologists for freedom of expression, joy, and boundless potential. Let’s amplify the diversity of these tech trailblazers while simultaneously widening the pathways so that every girl, this generation of girls – regardless of race, gender, language, ability, economic status and geographic origin – lives their full potential”.
Get involved
You can be a part of this year's International Day of the Girl Child by sharing stories or videos of inspiring adolescent girls who have done remarkable things in various fields of life, talking about opportunities to your daughters and letting others know about this special day. You might like to donate to a charity that provides for underprivileged girls or you can educate your friends and followers by sharing some facts and statistics about young girls.
For example - Worldwide and collectively, girls ages 5 to 14 spend more than 160 million hours more on household chores than boys of the same age!
