The newly updated Foundations of Eating Disorders for Dietitians is HERE!! 📣

And screening is a KEY part of this training. Because the truth is that ALL Dietitians, working across ALL sectors will meet people who are experiencing food, eating and body-related distress, and knowing how to screen, then what to say and do next is CRITICAL (and core Dietetic practice!)

Screening for an eating disorder isn’t just about ticking boxes—it’s about asking thoughtful, open-ended questions that help clients feel safe enough to share. A thoughtful, trauma-informed approach means recognising that many people don’t see their behaviours as problematic, especially in a culture that normalises dieting and body dissatisfaction.
In our newly updated Foundations of Eating Disorders for Dietitians, we, .mindfuldietitian and .for.every.body, have put a TON of thought into the screening section which we hope will leave you feeling more confident and clear about how to navigate the assessment process with more awareness not only for what you’re listening out for, but what to say or do next.

We might ask questions like:
▫️“Can you tell me about your history with food and dieting?”
▫️ “Are there any foods you avoid? What’s behind that?”
▫️ “What happens when eating feels stressful or overwhelming?”
▫️ “How do you feel about your body, and how has that changed over time?”

In this conversation we’re not looking for a single “right” answer—we’re listening carefully for patterns of distress, rigidity, or shame. Many clients won’t identify as having an eating disorder, even if their behaviours suggest otherwise. By using curiosity instead of assumptions, we can uncover struggles that might otherwise go unspoken.

We are excited to bring this course to you as one way to support all Dietitians to feel more clear about your role(s). Learn more about the newly updated course via the QR code, 0r link in bio or stories. To help plug the current gaps, we’re offering 50% discount on this course for all Dietetic students and new grads (just reach out).

As a proud clinician, it’s a pleasure to be fundraising for them this GiveOUT Day! 🏳️‍⚧️🤍

Trans Space is a multidisciplinary health service that provides trans affirming support to trans & gender diverse (TGD) people and their families. We are led by the trans & gender diverse community and exist to serve our community.

Your donation will help provide timely, affordable, and essential counselling services for trans & gender diverse folks, and subsidised WPATH assessments for those seeking gender affirming surgeries. It will also support to offer vital health and well-being workshops, and creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. Together, we can bring trans affirming healthcare to those who need it most.

I’m aiming to raise $500 and ask for your help to meet my goal by GiveOUT Day on 17 October.

Your contribution will be matched by GiveOUT, doubling your impact (T&C apply)!

Your donations will be greatly appreciated and directly support trans healthcare in our community 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

You can donate now by clicking the link in my bio. Thanks for your support!

Happy ♾️

We know there is a correlation between autism (and other forms of neurodivergence) and eating disorders. Yet, traditional eating disorder treatment models were not designed with consideration of neurodivergent folks.

Neurodivergent traits are often overlooked, pathologised, or assumed to be a product of the eating disorder.

Eating disorder treatment should be disability and neurodivergent-affirming. It should consider, respect and accomodate neurodivergent needs, abilities and differences.

We know that nutrition and relationship with food can significantly affect mental health and wellbeing.

But as dietitians, our role in supporting mental health goes beyond this. We are required to consider how our practice contributes to the wellbeing of our clients.

Approaches that do not actively value and advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion can contribute to individual and systemic oppression, and poor mental health outcomes.

To truly optimise mental health and wellbeing, we need to:
- Recognise the impacts of stigma and discrimination
- Acknowledge how power and privilege result in systemic injustices
- Reflect on how identities are intersectional and nuanced
- Listen and learn from lived experience and marginalised populations
- Advocate for equity, accessibility, inclusion, and change

Lived experience is indisputably one of the most valuable teachers. So listen up!

Last week I asked “what do dietitians/dietetic students most need to know about EDs?” in my stories, to include as part of introductory training on eating disorders for dietetic masters students. Whilst many will go on to dietitian that don’t specialise in EDs treatment, it’s important to acknowledge that ALL dietitians and health professionals, across all specialities and settings, will see eating disorders in their work. And therefore play an important role in ED awareness, prevention and early identification.

So what do you think we need to know? I received so many responses that I unfortunately could not include them all in a single post (will post the remaining to stories).

If you work with humans, you will work with eating disorders 🤎

Boundary setting is a skill we talk about a lot when it comes to navigating holiday celebrations.

Finding the right words to respond to unhelpful conversation can feel daunting. Even with discussions in therapy, and preparation of scripts and phrases, sometimes our capacity to utilise such techniques in real time can feel impossible. And this is okay.

I want to emphasis the fact that boundaries don’t always have to look like firm statements rejecting diet talk, defending your recovery, or providing education on health beyond weight at the dinner table. Boundary setting extends to the boundaries we set with ourself, regarding how much we are willing to engage in unhelpful dialogue (which can still occur despite directly communicated boundaries).

You have every right to express your discomfort with discussions that don’t sit well with you, but you are also under no obligation to do so. Celebratory events can last for hours and days, and we need to acknowledge that our energy to verbalise our discomfort will be unpredictable. Responses can sometimes lead to group discussion, which can take more from us than we feel we have to give.

If what feels the most protective of your peace is to remove yourself from a conversation and redirect focus to your own goals and values, this is STILL a boundary. Ignoring comments and changing the subject is STILL a boundary. If you don’t feel safe to say something, it doesn’t make you a failure. You need to do what protects your wellbeing in a given moment.

Be gentle with yourself these holidays. Your best is always enough.
