Activate Mental Health

Activate Mental Health 😀😃😄😁😆😂🤣 Our mission:

Improving well-being through a positive, vibrant and well connected social community.

Activate Mental Health is a dynamic mental health initiative that promotes the importance of community & social connection for positive mental health & wellbeing. Established in 2016 as the Perth Active Depression Support Group, the group has grown and continues to assist its members in improving their mental health through dynamic social activities. Our values:

Acceptance: we welcome people from

all walks of life. Community: we provide a welcoming and inclusive platform for our members to feel connected and valued. Fun: we run engaging and enjoyable events. This group generally operates in the central areas of Perth and runs the occasional online meetup.

Uno isn’t just a card game. It’s one of the simplest, most joyful ways we create connection at Activate Mental Health.

Our latest blog dives into why Uno has become such a powerful part of our community: how a light‑hearted game can break down barriers, spark laughter, ease social anxiety, and help people feel genuinely included.

It even traces back to our very first meetup in 2016, coffee, conversation, and a deck of cards that started it all.

If you’ve ever wondered why our Uno events are so popular (or why Uno Flip and Uno No Mercy can get wild), this is a great read.

And if you’re ready to experience the fun for yourself, come join us at an upcoming event.

We host board game nights, one‑off Uno sessions, and plenty of other welcoming activities designed to help people connect.

If you’re in the City of Gosnells, check out this program bring offered by Justin, who helped to design our volunteer recruitment processes.

If you’re keen to take a breather from the everyday chaos, MEN in the HOOD is a series of chilled sessions for men, facilitated by Justin from MenTall.

It’s all super relaxed and non judgemental — a mix of hands on activities, chats with other good blokes, and a bit of self discovery. Nothing too weird or strange, we promise 😅.

Bring a mate or come along and meet some new ones, pick up some useful life skills, and hopefully walk away feeling a bit more sorted.

We’re running nine sessions, once a month on a Saturday afternoon at Thornlie Park Centre. Come to one — or even better, the whole lot.

📍 The first session is Saturday 18 April
🕤 1pm - 4pm

🌳 Hyde Park Walking Group

From last October until just yesterday, our Hyde Park Walking Group has been a wonderful partnership between Activate Mental Health and the Rotary Club of Northbridge, and what an impact it’s made.

Week after week, people came along to walk, chat, laugh, breathe, and feel connected. These mornings became a cherished routine of community care, made possible only because of our 8 fantastic volunteers who kept the walks going with warmth, consistency, and genuine compassion.

To our volunteer team: thank you for showing up, for holding space, and for creating an environment where everyone felt safe, welcomed, and recognised. You’ve truly made a difference.

And to everyone who joined us along the way, this isn’t goodbye.

🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ There will be plenty more walks ahead.

💬 More conversations.
🤝 More connection.
😃 More community in motion.

Stay tuned, we’re just getting started. 💚🧡

“Life taught me something unexpected that happiness isn’t just built through achievement. It’s built through connection, service, and belonging.”

On this , we’re celebrating one of our favourite truths: Happiness grows when we give it away.

In her inaugural blog post, Shabnaz, an engineer, artist, immigrant, and Activate Mental Health volunteer, shares her powerful journey of finding purpose, courage, and community through volunteering.

Her story is a reminder that:
💚 Happiness is being welcomed without judgement
🧡 Happiness is created in small acts of kindness
💚 Happiness grows when we show up for each other
🧡 Happiness is found in community, not isolation

Volunteering didn’t just allow her to support others. It helped her feel grounded, connected, and at home in a new country. And that’s the magic of community: it gives back in ways we don’t expect.

And if you’re curious about volunteering, joining an event, or simply finding a place where you belong, we’d love to welcome you into our community.

Because happiness grows when we work together, as

"On this International Day of Happiness, I want to reach out to anyone who feels ‘in between’ whether that’s between countries, careers, emotions, or different stages of life."

Our 2025 Annual Impact Survey results are in, and one message came through loud and clear:

💬 74% of respondents said their mental health has improved through being part of Activate Mental Health.

That’s not just a number. That’s hundreds of small conversations, shared laughs, new friendships, and moments of “I feel understood here”.

And there’s more good news from the survey:

✅ 80% of our community feels less socially isolated thanks to Activate Mental Health.
✅ 67% joined to make new friends
✅ 61% wanted to reduce social isolation
✅ 53% simply wanted to have some fun
💯 And every single person said they’d recommend Activate Mental Health to others!

Thank you to everyone who shared their voice, and to every volunteer, host, and supporter who makes this community feel like home.

If you’re looking for connection, fun, and inclusion, we’d love to welcome you.

Walk with us… or run, and make every step count.

We’re gearing up for the 2026 HBF Run for a Reason, and this year we’re moving with purpose: to raise funds that help more people find connection, community, and support.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual walker, or someone who just loves being part of something bigger, you’re invited to join our team.

Every kilometre you cover helps us create more spaces where people feel seen, supported, and never alone.

Also, consider joining us for the event.

We are doing the 4km walk, 12km Walk or 12km Run.

Caroline will guide the 4 km walk, while Andrew and Rahul will be your enthusiastic hosts for the 12 km walk.

The lively Brian and Emma will lead the 12km run.
