Did you know the way a birth unfolds can impact the mother and how she feels about herself for a long time afterwards?

Research also supports that the birth process can have implications for the physical and emotional mother-baby relationship.

A mother's relationship with her caregivers is also correlated with how she feels about her birth.

Birth debriefing is so important for all women, but especially those who have had a more difficult birth, felt violated, disappointed, shocked or unsupported.

Being able to speak with your caregiver or another party who can help them start the healing process is vital.

Let's sum that up!
- the relationship with your caregiver matters
-support post birth to debrief is an important step to start emotion healing and feeling supported
- the birth process has physical and emotional consequences for mother-baby relationship.

I talk a lot about preparing for birth- why?
not only can it change how your birth goes but it can also help strengthen your relationship with caregivers, creating supportive trusting relationships.
Knowing about the process of birth, your options, informed consent and starting to create a healthy emotional environment - this empowers you and your birthing process.

Our mind is a powerful tool to learn how to harness and utilise in preparing for birth and motherhood.

Our thoughts are things- they're real, and they quickly impact our physiology.

We can run thought programs with no conscious awareness, but our body is always listening. It will always respond.

Thoughts not alone drive our physiology, but our emotions as well. And how we feel drives our actions....

For example fear will drive constriction, it will change hormone balance and inhibit the happy birth and pain relieving hormones from pumping through your system.
Who's pelvic floor is beautifully relaxed if they're dreading delivery?

So here’s my top 3 ways to utilise this for an easier birth,

* acknowledge your fears
*acknowledge all feelings no matter how insignificant
*reflect on your actions and decisions

And then..... take some action.

The magic of the mind and thoughts is they are there for you to change. Increasing your knowledge, tools, confidence, and ability immediately changes the thoughts you have...

This is what I love to work through with the women I work with during pregnancy. If you're interested in knowing more follow or DM me.

Wanting to befriend your pelvic floor during pregnancy?

There's so much to think about when you're pregnant, too much information can be overwhelming.

So let me make this simple.

Previously I told you why it's worth doing antenatal pelvic floor and perineal preparation.

Let me give you an idea on how.

My top 6 ways to prep the pelvic floor and perineum before labour are;

1. Perineal massage
2. Pelvic Floor Muscle Training
3. Pelvic Floor Muscle co-ordination on Valsalva
4. Pelvic balancing exercises
5. Pelvic floor relaxation techniques
6. Breath work techniques.

So where to start?

Always my advice will be to find an experienced and trusted women's health physio to walk you through and individualise these for you.

Because there's so much to each one of these techniques stay tuned as I will diving into each of these technqiues more deeply in the next few posts!

This post is proudly brought to you by........ the research!!!

Yes the most recent research in women's health is so supportive of getting to know all about you pelvic floor and perineum in pregnancy.

Ok so for many women in pregnancy it's easy to coast through. Not everyone has problems and need a women's health physio before they have their baby.

But what if I told you learning some info before hand might mean you're less likely to need a lovely women's health physio in the future- hell yes please!!!!

ok here we go on the WHY it's worth working on the pelvic floor and perineum while pregnant from the stats.....

1. reduced need for episiotomy.
2. decrease in risk of higher degree tears.
3. less perineal pain postpartum
4. shorter 2nd stage in labour
5. better pelvic floor coordination helps with 2nd stage labour
6. decreased chance urinary incontinence in late pregnancy and early postpartum
7. pelvic floor info antenatally is associated with a reduction in the feelings of regret postpartum.

As always I want to reinforce the completely unpredictable nature of birth, and ticking all the antenatal birth prep boxes doesn't mean the perfect birth is promised.
But it does mean you've done your diligence and given yourself the best chance of pelvic floor happiness.

SO now you're asking how do i prep the pelvic floor and perineum?

Follow and like coz that ones coming next!
