YOGA IN PSYCHIATRY.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists ( )

This congress workshop in Melbourne on Informed & , holds personal meaning.

For many years I have sought to complement the medical system with yoga to integrate both worlds after my sister was prescribed a fatal antidepressant Zoloft at the age of fifteen, a drug later linked to suicidal tendencies in young people. She died from that pharmaceutical intervention, and that loss shaped my path.

Over time, through teaching and healing as naturally as possible, I have met psychiatrists who embody compassion, restraint, and wisdom, using medication only when necessary and valuing somatic interventions such as breath, yoga, and meditation. This integration feels significant to many, I know.

I have gratitude to the many doctor’s I have met for exemplifying this union of medicine, somatics and natural healing through consciousness.

You will continue to meet these amazing educators through BIYOME to help unite these two fields - Yoga in psychiatric care.

The best thing about yoga is that is self empowering practice. You learn to do it all on your own.

This is what clearly sets it apart from allied health. You take ownership and you heal. You don’t need anyone else to do it for you.

For those who may fondly remember - Ailsa Gartenstein - recently died in her 90s. Ailsa was my Mothers introduction to , almost 60 years ago.

Mary-Anne Roberts (my Mum) wrote these words many years ago: 😊

“I started the practice of yoga at age 17 in 1969 when yoga was very new to Australia and to Brisbane. I was living at one of the colleges at the University of Qld and began attending the Ailsa Gartenstein school of yoga - which was upstairs in a dimly lit, and very modest room.I remember feeling very good after the sessions so a friend and I went to considerable trouble to get there weekly on Wednesday evenings (with our rolled up beach towels to put over the carpet) for our practice. Over the years, I have had 5 exercises which I am committed to do very frequently, if not daily. My idea is that if I can still do these today (saving some catastrophic event) I will be able to do them on all of my tomorrows. My plan is to improve my and . Meanwhile, I love the weekly class with Celia. It spices up the daily 5 practices and I now have a couple of extras, which are a must- do" practices- to help with specific health issues. Yoga is a form of physical exercise. Ultimately, it encompasses an entire . That is its enormous appeal to me.”

I’m currently preparing to deliver trauma-informed yoga, breathwork, and pranayama at the Congress in .

It will be a very different audience.

“ is not what you think. You sit in absolute silence and your mind starts going through all your movies. During that process, you become so familiar with the scripts you keep in your life that you end up getting sick of them. Then you realize that the person you think you are is just a complicated script you spend most of your energy on. After a more thorough examination, you'll find out that your personality has had enough of you. And that's because it's not really you. If you feel terrified enough by that personality, spontaneously allow it to fade away. And then, if you're lucky, you can experience yourself without the distortion of that personality. That's basically the process."

Here is the story by Cleo Hyde.

“Psychologically, the experience aims to be a reset, with emotional release and existential reckoning.

"A sensory [DARK] retreat can be called
'meditation on steroids'," says founder and senior teacher Celia Roberts from The BioMedical Institute of Yoga and Meditation (BIYOME; https://biyome.com.au/biyome-dark-grey-retreats/).

"It's a yogic tradition that's hugely beneficial to melatonin production (the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle]." BIYOME's three-hour evening immersion sessions are held four times a year in the hills of Upper Brookfield, 20 kilometres west of Brisbane. Thẻ classes encompass stillness, gentle movement, guided contemplations and dream-yoga techniques. And the participants?

"Overstimulated and overworked beginners, as well as experienced meditators," says Roberts, Dark retreats aren't about deprivation for deprivation's sake. The challenge is to manage the under-stimulation and boredom so at odds with ourtimes.

"Reduced sensory input is a purification practice that helps us explore the 'emptiness' or true nature of the mind," says Roberts.”
