Years of sun exposure can lead to solar keratosis, which is essentially sun-damaged skin that can sometimes progress to skin cancer if left untreated.

These rough, scaly patches often appear on the face, scalp, hands, and other sun-exposed areas. Photodynamic Therapy is an excellent preventative and treatment option for these areas.

By treating solar keratosis early with PDT, we can prevent the progression to squamous cell carcinoma and restore your skin's health.

Early detection and treatment are key to preventing more serious skin conditions.

A skin cancer diagnosis is more than skin deep. Emerging research is exploring the emotional and psychological impact that can come with it.

A study published in JMIR Dermatology found that while patients with nonmelanoma skin cancer report higher levels of mental distress, this is often influenced by broader life factors rather than the cancer alone.

Age, income, existing health conditions and social support all play a significant role in emotional wellbeing throughout a cancer journey.

This reinforces the importance of holistic care. True healing involves supporting the whole person, not just treating the disease.

If you or someone you love is navigating a diagnosis, remember your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Seeking support is a sign of strength.

Support is available. Speak with your doctor, connect with reputable organisations and prioritise your wellbeing.

When a "Simple" Mole Needs a Closer Look

This blue nevus was causing concern due to itching and bleeding. While benign, its dermoscopic appearance made ruling out melanoma challenging. We opted for a shave excision to remove the lesion and send it for histology.

The result? A benign blue nevus confirmed, and a minimal scar for the patient. This is why we always examine before we remove. Your safety and peace of mind are our priority.

Concerned about a mole? Book a consultation with Dr. Tina Fang or Dr. Jack Fu.

Skin cancer rates are rising, and awareness has never been more important.

Melanoma diagnoses are predicted to increase by 10.6% in 2026. Over the past decade, invasive melanoma cases have risen by 46.6%. Invasive means the cancer has penetrated deeper into the skin, increasing the risk of spread.

Early detection is critical. The 5 year survival rate is 99% when melanoma is detected before it spreads. This drops to 35% once it reaches distant organs.

While the average age of diagnosis is 66, rates are increasing in people under 30. Risk factors include lighter skin, a history of sunburns and having numerous moles.

Know the ABCDEs of melanoma. Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter greater than 6mm and Evolving changes. If you notice anything new or changing, seek medical advice promptly.

Protect yourself daily. Seek shade, wear protective clothing and apply broad spectrum sunscreen every day. Prevention remains your strongest defence.

The scalp is one of the areas most exposed to the sun, making it a common site for solar keratosis – those rough, scaly patches that can eventually turn into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Treating these patches on the scalp can be challenging. Because the scalp is a high-tension area, surgical excisions can be particularly painful and may have a difficult recovery.

This is where Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) offers a significant advantage. PDT is a non-surgical 'field treatment' that allows us to treat broader areas of sun damage on the scalp without incisions. A light-activated cream precisely targets and destroys the precancerous cells, effectively treating the solar keratosis and significantly reducing the risk of it progressing to skin cancer.

If you have scaly patches on your scalp, don't ignore them. Consult with our expert doctors, Dr. Tina Fang and Dr. Jack Fu, to see if PDT is the right solution for you. It’s a safer, less painful way to protect your scalp’s health.
