Dying is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

We spend years planning, plotting, and creating Pinterest boards for engagements, weddings, new houses, milestone birthdays, baby showers - things we may do only once - but are just as likely to do more than once.

Yet very few of us give our funeral, memorial, or wake more than a passing thought.

At the end of the road, we can slide out quietly or go out with a bang - the choice should be yours. Except most people leave it up to someone else to decide.

FACTS OF LIFE (AND DEATH)

When it comes to funeral planning, people generally sit in one of two camps:

Camp #1: "Do whatever you want, I'll be dead!" (which is usually code for "I don't want to think about it, so I'll handball that emotionally fraught hot potato to you instead to negotiate with your siblings who have differing ideas of 'what you want' actually looks like.")

Camp #2: Detailed instructions that involve complicated burial plans, technologies that aren't yet available in Australia, or itineraries for travel to exotic locations where they wish to have their ashes scattered, without much thought to whether or not the plan can actually be executed (or is financially viable).

Without clear (achievable) instructions, funeral planning and decisions around what to do with the dead person's body often become the very first thing families scramble for answers on, or end up fighting over after death.

What your executor and/or your family needs is information around your wishes to follow in their confusion, grief and overwhelm. But not so many instructions that your last hurrah feels like delivering a Broadway production. The best way to communicate all that is in your will.

Good estate planning focuses on ALL the things your family needs to help them navigate life after your death - not just the money.

Today we celebrated Mrs V. A wonderful celebration for a remarkable lady who obviously touched so many hearts. The service and burial took place on the grounds of her granddaughter’s property.
