“Your Map Is Not the Territory”.
What does this mean?
We don’t respond to the world itself, we respond to OUR version of it.
Imagine that life is a vast, complex landscape — full of people, places, events, and possibilities. Now imagine that each of us is walking through that same landscape with our own hand-drawn map. But this map only includes the parts we’ve noticed, been taught to believe, or experienced firsthand.
Our map is drawn by our life: our family, our culture, our education, our emotions, our memories, even the meaning we gave things at the time. And because everyone’s life is different, everyone’s map is different too.
That’s why two people can have the same external experience, yet interpret it in
completely different ways. (Ever chatted to siblings or other family members and recalled completely different versions of the same event?)
If we believe our map is the territory, then we’ll assume everyone should see things
the way we do. And that leads to judgment, frustration, and misunderstanding.
When we remember that everyone is operating from their own map, we can create space for empathy, flexibility, and deeper connection.
Our unconscious minds uses filters to manage the overwhelming amount of data it receives. These filters include:
• Deletion: Leaving out things we don’t consider important;
• Distortion: Bending information to fit our beliefs;
• Generalisation: Treating one experience as a rule for all.
These are useful shortcuts, but they can also create blind spots and limits.
What if our frustrations with others weren’t about them being wrong, but about them
seeing from a different map?
“Your map is not the Territory “.
