Ulcers, which are open sores in the skin, occur when the outer layers of the skin are injured and the deeper tissues become exposed. They can be caused by excess pressure due to ill-fitting shoes, long periods in bed or after an injury that breaks the skin. Ulcers are commonly seen in patients living with diabetes, neuropathy or vascular disease. These open wounds can put patients at increased risk of developing infection in the skin and bone.

The signs and symptoms of ulcers may include drainage, odor or red, inflamed, thickened tissue. Pain may or may not be present. Diagnosis may include x-rays to evaluate possible bone involvement. Other advanced imaging studies may also be ordered to evaluate for vascular disease, which may affect a patient’s ability to heal the wound.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes affecting the arms, hands, legs and feet. As diabetic peripheral neuropathy progresses, various nerves are affected, which can cause problems that encourage development of ulcers. People living with diabetes play a vital role in preventing neuropathy by keeping blood sugar under control, wearing well-fitting shoes, inspecting your feet, and regularly visiting your primary care doctor and foot and ankle surgeon.

Last night, 23 October 2023, ABC’s 7.30 program presented a concerning story relating to a podiatrist. The Australian Podiatry Association (APodA) condemns the nature of alleged practices highlighted in this report.

The alleged practices in last night’s news report are not reflective of the exceptional work that podiatrists do to improve the lives of many Australians.

The practitioner mentioned in the news report is not a member of APodA. Whilst APodA cannot comment on specific cases, practitioners who do not participate in accordance with the rules run the risk of penalties, which are determined by the regulators.

APodA works collaboratively with regulators and the various funding schemes to provide regular education and communication in compliance with the rules, as stipulated by the various health fund schemes, which supports our members in providing safe and effective services.

APodA takes great pride in the work of its members who strive to improve the foot health for millions of people in Australia and will continue to support practitioners to deliver exceptional services.

The APodA was not contacted by the ABC in relation to this story.
