What happens when labour stalls?

One major factor is hormonal — if a mother feels unsupported or unsafe in her environment or with a care provider, adrenaline levels can rise. This surge in stress hormones can suppress oxytocin, the key hormone that drives contractions, causing labour to stall or slow.

Another reason is physical restriction. As babies navigate their way through the pelvis — spiraling and rotating, it’s important that the connective tissues are soft and mobile. Tight or imbalanced tissues can act like roadblocks, making it harder for the baby to move through. When babies are trying to navigate their way through tight tissues, it often leads to longer labours. Long labours in a system that often doesn’t wait, leads to instrumental or surgical births.

Internal Pelvic Release Work supports the soft tissues of the pelvis, helping to release tension and create more space. This work invites the tissues to relax, giving both mother and baby more room to move.

IPRW doesn’t imply you’re not capable of birthing your baby. Rather, it helps your body reach its full anatomical potential, often leading to smoother births and less trauma.

Bookings available via the link in my bio - recommended from 32 weeks x

IPRW in pregnancy is a bigggg focus for me.

It is common for women to seek out IPRW in their subsequent pregnancies because they want to heal from a previous birth and/or avoid the same outcome in their upcoming birth. This is great and I highly encourage this work if you have previous scars from birth or you want a different birth outcome.

Even more so, I want to encourage women to seek this care in their FIRST pregnancy so that we can minimise the need to heal from tears, cuts, pelvic floor damage from forceps, pelvic floor damage from pushing for 2 hours, tension from scars etc. It’s not supposed to be like this 😭

If you want to prepare your body for birth please reach out or book via the link in my bio 🤍

OK so this is NOT a post to diss Women’s Health Physiotherapist in any way, I fully respect their work. I am sharing this because I have commonly heard women say they have had internal pelvic release with a physiotherapist. I wanted to explain that the two services are quite different in many ways - both necessary, both valuable.

I hope this helps a little in understanding more about IPRW. If you have any questions please reach out.

Internal Pelvic Release Work for Birth Prep ✨

The intention of IPRW was initially for birth prep. Softening the tissues and creating space within the pelvic space to minimise the risk of babe being in a less than optimal position, having to navigate their way through tight tissues and to reduce trauma to the birthing woman’s pelvic space (and mental space). Since the modalty has grown, it has now become known that it is widely beneficial for a range of pelvic conditions. But back to a little about birth prep…

Now I do believe that our babies are so clever at working their way out of the birth passage. They will usually find a way when given the time, place and with the right support.

However, I also know that:
1. Women and babies usually are not given the time and may not always have the right support within the mainstream maternity system
2. Labour is a hell of a lot nicer without having to navigate babe being in a malposition (posterior, asynclitic, deflexed etc)
3. A shorter pushing stage, less pelvic trauma and a reduced need for a instrumental birth is worth preparing for in pregnancy
4. Birth is too big of an event to leave it up to chance (especially in a broken system)

IPRW for birth prep is recommended from 32 weeks gestation and ideally, again at 36 weeks.
You will be provided with tips and “homework” to complete at home to further prepare your body and tissues for birth.

If you have any questions please reach out.

The most important reason is that there doesn’t have to be a reason. Womb Massage truely is something that every woman needs to experience, even if you no longer have a physical womb.

Works are underway in creating the perfect space to share my offerings ✨

I will be opening a physical space in Violet Town in February, which I am beyond excited for. I have put a lot of thought and intention into the creation of this space, making it feel safe, warm and welcoming. My hours are limited while I start off and figure things out, but I intend on expanding my hours later in the year, as well as welcoming another special offering from mid year.

Bookings are now OPEN with dates available from mid February onwards. Link to bookings below!
