There is a lot of fear-based messaging around the pill (aka hormonal contraception). We hear about side effects, conflicting philosophies, and plenty of misinformation. Most naturopaths focus on why you “shouldn’t” be on it.

But here’s what I believe: like any medication, the pill can be an empowering tool.

For many, debilitating periods are not just “a bad few days.” We’re talking about bleeding through a tampon in under an hour, being curled up in pain for days, mood swings that make you feel like a different person, or acne that knocks your confidence no matter what you try.

Yes, there are natural solutions, but they take time, effort, and money for consults and supplements. Lifestyle and nutrition changes aren’t always realistic or accessible. In these situations, hormonal contraception can genuinely change a woman’s quality of life. The freedom to prevent pregnancy has also been one of the most empowering health advances for women globally.

What frustrates me is when the pill is presented as a fix. The truth:

- It works by taking over as your body’s source of estrogen and/or progesterone, which switches off your brain’s need to produce hormones and prevents ovulation.
- When you stop, your body simply returns to the state it was in before. The pill does not heal your hormone pathways, fix inflammation, or resolve the root causes driving your symptoms.
- This is why many people find that their heavy periods, acne, or mood swings return once they come off.

So yes, hormonal contraception can change your quality of life and reduce symptoms in the short term. Like all medications, it comes with risks and potential side effects that may or may not outweigh the benefits.

In my clinic this happens so often…

A client comes to me exhausted, foggy, struggling with weight gain, mood changes, or fertility challenges. Their doctor has run a thyroid test. The TSH is “normal” but it’s sitting on the higher end of the range (above 2.5).

They’re told everything is fine.

This is why “normal” isn’t always optimal. A TSH above 2.5 can be an early sign of dysfunction, which can be supported with nutrition and lifestyle.

This is the body’s immune system mistakenly targeting thyroid tissue, and it’s one of the earliest signs of immune dysregulation and metabolic dysfunction. Left unchecked, it can drive under-function of the thyroid and set the stage for:
❌ Fatigue no matter how much you sleep
❌ Brain fog and poor concentration
❌ Unexplained weight gain
❌ Feeling cold all the time and poor circulation
❌ Low mood or depression
❌ Elevated cholesterol
❌ Struggles with fertility

This is why “normal” isn’t always optimal. A TSH above 2.5 can be an early red flag of dysfunction which can be supported with nutrition and lifestyle.

You’ve been told your blood tests are “fine”... but you still feel exhausted, depleted, and dragging yourself out of bed every morning.

Here’s the truth:

- Iron can be “in range” but still leave you foggy, weak, and tired. Inflammation and missing cofactors (like vitamin A or protein) can drive dysfunction without needing more iron supplements.
- TSH isn’t usually flagged until it’s above 4, yet subclinical hypothyroidism happens much earlier — showing up as fatigue, weight struggles, constipation, cold intolerance, even fertility issues.
- Vitamin D isn’t routinely tested, but deficiency is common. Low mood, poor immunity, and fatigue are classic signs and overdosing is possible without testing.
- B12 can look “normal” on paper but still be too low to feel well. Many women sit under 400 and experience brain fog, low energy, and forgetfulness.
- Higher bilirubin isn’t always “clinically relevant,” but it tells us a lot about detox pathways. Sluggish oestrogen clearance can drive PMS, sore breasts, bloating, and heavy periods.

“Normal” doesn’t always mean optimal. This is why I help women decode their blood tests and connect the dots between results and symptoms.

- Vitamin C – hyped as an “immunity booster” but you’ll get plenty from real food.
- Probiotics – I self-prescribed and actually made my gut worse (because the microbiome is complex).
- “Energy” supps – a quick fix during burnout, but never fixed the fatigue.
- Tissue salts – the “mystery pills” with minimal evidence.

‘At first glance, naturopathy is so fluffy… but there’s so much technicality and knowledge that goes on behind the scenes.’

Someone said this to me recently and it really stuck.

It’s true — naturopathy has a long, traditional history that some people imagine as herbs in teacups, moon rituals and a ‘witchy’ vibe. And while that history is beautiful and worth honouring, my work is far from fluffy.

Behind every consult is hours of clinical training, functional testing interpretation, nutritional biochemistry, and an evidence-informed understanding of how the body’s systems work together.

When we talk about finding the root cause, that’s not a slogan… it’s about identifying the underlying drivers of your symptoms, from gut microbiome imbalances to nutrient deficiencies, hormone shifts, and nervous system dysregulation.

So yes, you might see me mixing up my liquid herbs (defs looking like a witch) but I prescribe herbs because I know the phytochemicals in each herb, how they’re metabolised, their interactions with medications, and why they’re the right fit for your case.

Root cause healing isn’t magic. It’s science, applied with care.
