Winter is the season which calls us to turn inwards, reflect, and conserve our energy.
It is not uncommon to feel depleted and stagnant this time of year. With the freezing morning weather urging us to just stay warm in bed just a little longer, the lack of sunlight leaving us feeling unmotivated, and the shorter days making it harder to fit things in, it's no wonder we can feel exhausted.
💫 Yin yoga offers us guidance to press pause, give ourselves permission to slow down, and receive rest 💫
The stillness and silence that is created within a Yin practice offers a deeper layer of space for us to drop into and rest. The nervous system can breathe a sigh of relief as we finally allow ourselves to stop "doing", and instead we can simply "be".
When we are constantly "doing" and forever "on the go", the nervous system switches to its fight/flight mode in order to sustain the energy that these states require. This fight/flight mode opposes the rest/digest mode, which then leaves us feeling tired, restless, and often causing digestive issues over time.
Stay suspended in the fight/flight mode for too long, and we eventually switch over to "autopilot" - we are no longer in our body. We are existing above the neck only.
Here are 3 reasons why Yin is an excellent practice for winter:
✨ Yin is a meditative practice of yoga. Its very nature calls us in to presence, invites us to notice, and become more aware of the body's experience and sensations.
✨ Yin is an excellent practice to clear stagnation in the body's subtle energies, and to gently nourish and re-charge.
✨ Yin challenges the restless, fidgety energies that resist coming into stillness and present awareness. With consistent practice, we work that meditative "muscle", and leaning into present awareness becomes easier and more accessible with time and patience.
