Sleep is an important part of overall health and wellbeing, helping our bodies and minds recover, recharge and stay strong.

Poor sleep over time can increase the risk of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and mental health challenges. Getting enough quality sleep supports energy, focus, mood and long-term health.

Here are three simple ways to improve your sleep health:

β€’ Keep a regular sleep routine - Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
β€’ Create a calm sleep space - Turn off screens, dim the lights and give your body time to wind down before bed.
β€’ Limit caffeine late in the day - Avoid coffee, energy drinks and sugary drinks in the afternoon and evening.

😴 Having trouble sleeping? Yarn with your GP about ways to improve your sleep health.

How can our mob shape the future of medicine?

ALIGN and AH&MRC are inviting community to be part of a conversation about precision medicine - a new way of understanding health by looking at the story carried in our DNA.

This project is about working alongside Aboriginal communities to design a precision medicine program that is culturally safe and guided by community priorities.

Your voice matters. Your knowledge matters. Your perspective can help shape how this work happens for our communities in NSW.

If you’d like to learn more or get involved, come along and yarn with the team.

Kidney disease is a serious health issue for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Around 1 in 5 First Nations Australians show signs of kidney disease, and many people don’t realise they have it until the condition becomes serious.

Kidney disease can develop quietly and early detection can help prevent serious complications such as kidney failure, dialysis or transplant.

Here are three simple ways to look after your kidney health:

β€’ Get regular health checks - A simple blood and urine test can help detect kidney problems early.
β€’ Manage diabetes and blood pressure - These are leading causes of kidney disease.
β€’ Stay active and eat healthy - Drinking water, eating well and maintaining a healthy weight all support kidney health.

🩺 Yarn with your GP today about checking your kidney health.

πŸ‘ Don’t lose sight of your eye health.

Vision problems are one of the most common long-term health conditions affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. First Nations Australians over 40 experience vision loss at around three times the rate of non-Indigenous Australians, often from conditions that can be prevented or treated if caught early.

Glaucoma can develop quietly without early symptoms, which is why regular eye checks are so important.

Here are three simple ways to look after your eye health:

β€’ Get regular eye checks - Book an eye check every 1–2 years, even if your vision seems fine.
β€’ Protect your eyes from the sun - Wear polarised sunglasses and a wide-brim hat when outdoors.
β€’ Look after your overall health - Manage conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, eat well, and avoid smoking.

🩺 Yarn with your GP or optometrist today about getting your eyes checked.

Routines help kids grow strong and keep the stress down for everyone. πŸ‘πŸ’›

Having a regular routine at home can lower stress, ease anxiety, and help kids (and parents!) build healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Here are a few routines that can make a big difference:
⭐ Brushing teeth and washing hands, teach kids about self-care and hygiene early on
⭐ Playtime and movement, helps burn energy and build confidence
⭐ Regular bedtimes, toddlers need around 14 hours of sleep each day (including naps!) to stay rested and well

Need a hand getting into a routine that works for your family?
Our Family Services Unit at RivMed can help create a plan that fits your mob’s needs.
