Meet Steven: 1 year and 15 days sober, and a true inspiration to us all. After completing 6 months in our program, Steven’s journey is a testament to courage, commitment, and the power of change. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and the hope he brings to others.
Here’s a glimpse into Steven’s story:
What does reaching 12 months of recovery mean to you?
It means I have solidly looked at myself 24/7 for over 365 days, embraced change and support, and turned my life around.
What was the biggest challenge you faced this year, and how did you overcome it?
Leaving home and breaking away from the comfortable cycle. Walking through the doors of Calvary Drug and Alcohol was huge. I overcame it by attending CRDAC and working the 12 Steps.
What has been your proudest moment in recovery so far?
So many moments — but the biggest is the realisation that I am a good person, deserving of recovery and a sober life, with so much to offer.
Who or what has supported you the most on your journey?
CRDAC and the 12 Step fellowship (AA).
What healthy habits or routines have made the biggest difference?
Basic living — routine, structure, and re-learning everyday living skills.
How has your life changed compared to this time last year?
I’ve turned my whole life around. I feel incredibly lucky — it feels like a miracle.
What have you learned about yourself during recovery?
That I am valuable, loveable, precious, and worthy of love.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Come in with an open heart and mind. It doesn’t matter how much you think you know about addiction or recovery — tell yourself you know nothing and completely surrender to change.
What are your goals for the next 12 months?
To remember to take one day at a time. Each day, my aim is to get into bed clean and sober. To continue being of service and giving back to others.
Steven’s story reminds us that recovery is possible, and every day is a new opportunity for hope.
