A heatwave is predicted for our region from Saturday 24 January to Wednesday 28 January 2026, coinciding with the long weekend.

Wagga Wagga City Council is urging residents to plan ahead to stay cool, particularly as many Council facilities and local community centres will be closed on the Australia Day public holiday, Monday 26 January.

If you don’t have air conditioning at home, cool spaces can help you escape the heat. These include air-conditioned community facilities, local pools and shopping centres.

🇦🇺 Australia Day public holiday: A temporary Cool Centre will be open on Monday 26 January at the Seniors Community Centre, 104 Tarcutta Street, Wagga Wagga, from 9am–5pm, with air-conditioned spaces, bathrooms and drinking water available.

🏝️ Oasis Aquatic Centre will be open over the weekend, including Monday. Please note it is expected to be extremely busy and capacity will be capped. Check Wagga Leisure social media for updates before heading in.

🧊 Find cool spaces across the Murrumbidgee – MPHN has a list of the region's cool spaces at https://mphn.org.au/cool-spaces – Please contact individual councils for public holiday opening hours.

For more information about the heatwave and staying safe, visit:

Please check in on older people, neighbours and anyone who may be more vulnerable during extreme heat.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an extreme heat warning for parts of NSW, including the Riverina. The warning will remain in place over the coming days as temperatures continue to rise.

During this time, it's important to be aware of the risks associated with extreme heat and take necessary precautions to protect your health.

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health risks, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

While heatwaves can affect everyone, certain groups are more vulnerable, including the elderly, babies, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Being informed and prepared for extreme weather can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

For tips on minimising the health impacts of extreme heat, and information about local community spaces where you can access to beat the heat, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/heatwaves

🌟 What does it mean that KRS Health is a GP Teaching & RACGP Training Practice? 🌟

You may notice a GP Registrar working alongside our doctors at KRS Health, and we’d love to explain what that means for you as our patient.

Our registrars are fully qualified medical doctors who have completed at least 2–5 years of hospital and clinical experience before joining specialist General Practice training.

📚 They are training to become specialist GPs.
Registrars usually stay with any training practice for 6–12 months at a time (as required by the RACGP training program). During this period, they work closely under the supervision of our senior GPs, ensuring safe, high-quality care at all times. They also have to move to different practices during the program to gain broader experiences.

🤝 Supervised, supported, and safe care:
• Early in specialist GP training, registrars receive extra support and often discuss cases with senior doctors - it’s normal to have senior GP called in during consult at times to discuss the case and plan best management plan for you.
• As they gain experience, they work more independently, while still having support readily available
• Your care is always overseen by experienced GPs

💡 Why this is good for our patients
Being a teaching practice means:
✔️ We meet high standards set by national GP training organisations
✔️ Our doctors stay up to date with the latest medical knowledge
✔️ We foster a culture of learning, reflection, and excellence
✔️ You benefit from team-based care and fresh perspectives through shared care

🌱 Great doctors never stop learning
Medicine is constantly evolving. At KRS Health, we believe the best GPs — no matter how experienced — are lifelong learners. Teaching helps us all stay sharp, curious, and committed to best practice.

🏅 A mark of quality
Being an accredited GP training practice means we are trusted to train the next generation of GPs — a recognition of our strong clinical standards, patient care, and professional excellence.

Thank you for supporting medical education and being part of a practice that invests in the future of general practice 💙

If you ever have questions about who you’re seeing or would prefer a senior GP, please let our friendly reception team know — your comfort always comes first.

🎄 Holiday Seasons Staffing shortage Update at KRS Health Family Medical Practice 🎄

Dear our valued patients, Thank you for your patience and understanding during the holiday season. Over this period, many of our doctors are away on well-deserved leave. This means that at times, only 1–2 doctors are working to cover urgent care , and emerging health concerns for our patients in the community.and also keep track of incoming test results and correspondance on behalf of other doctors on leave.

As a result, you may notice:
• Longer waiting times
• Limited appointment availability
• Standard (not complex) consultations focused on urgent issues

We understand this can be frustrating, and we truly appreciate your kindness and support during this busy time.

💡 How you can help us help you:
• Please let our reception team know if you require a longer appointment
• If your concern is non-urgent, you may prefer to wait to see your regular GP when they return in mid-January

Our team is working incredibly hard despite staff shortage this time of the year to ensure everyone receives safe and appropriate care during this period.

Thank you for your understanding, respect, and continued support of our doctors and staff 💙

Summer is here and the days are heating up! ☀️

Remember, the higher the UV Index, the higher the risk of skin damage - even when it’s cool or cloudy.

Before you head out, check the UV Index. If it’s 3 or above, protect your skin:

👕 Slip on protective clothing
☀️ Slop on SPF50+ sunscreen every two hours
👒 Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
🌳 Seek shade
🕶️ Slide on sunnies
