This week is women’s health week!

Women’s health week is a dedicated week that focuses on the health and wellbeing of women and girls in Australia. We know that exercise is a powerful way to keep individuals healthy and strong. Our female only strength classes are designed for those navigating the physical changes of menopause and seeking to improve their bone health, strength, and overall well-being. Focused on combating the effects of osteoporosis, hormonal shifts, and muscle loss, the class blends strength training, functional movement, and mindful exercises to empower women during this transformative phase of life.

We hope to build a community and provide a supportive environment for women to build lasting strength, improve bone health, and nurture their bodies during this important time.

Last Friday, our team spent the day in a fantastic professional development session with Hayley! 🙌 It was a great mix of team-building activities, reflection, and growth (with plenty of laughs along the way). Big thanks to Hayley for guiding us through a productive and energising day!!

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Despite available treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation), recurrent cancers still develop in 20-40% of patients. The latest research on the benefits of exercise for cancer patients showed that those who engaged in structured exercise resulted in significantly longer disease-free survival, for example reduced likelihood of cancer recurrence, new cancer diagnosis or death. Not only this, but we also know that regular exercise can help improve one's quality of life by helping restoring function and movement during and after treatment, as well as showing other physical and mental health benefits as seen in the imaged taken from Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

At Extend, we offer a cancer exercise class for those wanting to include exercise as part of their cancer journey. For those who need more tailored support we encourage working individually with either our exercise physiologist or physiotherapist.

Meet Ben, one of our amazing physiotherapists here at Extend!

Ben joined the team in February this year and has been a fantastic addition ever since.

He completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science at the University of Wollongong and went on to complete a Master of Physiotherapy at the University of Technology Sydney.

Outside the clinic, Ben keeps busy staying active, playing AFL, and making music with his band!

At Extend, Ben enjoys the wide range of people he gets to work with – from musculoskeletal and sporting injuries to neurological and vestibular conditions. He also loves running group classes and being part of a supportive and welcoming team environment.

And fun fact – Ben is a through and through Sydney Swans supporter! 🔴⚪

As the population ages, we see an increased rate in age-related diseases, such as Dementia. Finding ways to support brain health in ageing is important. We know that being inactive is one of the greatest modifiable risk factors for dementia prevention. The evidence shows that exercise promotes a muscle-to-brain signalling as seen below.

A personalised approach to exercise is important as we know the status of older adults largely varies, meaning that each person might need a slightly different exercise plan. At Extend Health Co, we work with individuals looking to prolong their lifespan by keeping themselves independent, strong and mobilising well as long as possible. If you have any concerns or questions for yourself or someone in your life, give us a call, and we can see how we can help.

Say hello to one of the newest faces at Extend – Eva, our enthusiastic Occupational Therapist, who joined the team in February!

Eva completed a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at CSU Albury and brings a passion for helping clients create meaningful change in their lives.

Outside of work, Eva is always on the go – whether it’s gardening, helping out on the family farm, playing the flute, flower arranging, or baking up a storm, she’s never short of hobbies!

Eva's favourite part about working at Extend is working with the multidisciplinary team and supporting positive changes in the lives of her clients!

While she doesn't follow a particular team, she loves playing sport and has a few unique favourites: Wheelchair Basketball, Dragon Boat Racing, and recently – Squash!

We're so excited to have Eva as part of the team!
