It is said that the oldest English-language cookbook, The Forme of Cury, written in the early 14th century, contains the first known recipe for salad - a brazen little number that called for lettuce, leeks and spinach, served with a dressing of garlic, herbs and edible flowers of the time. Who would have thought that in the 21st century, this little recipe would still be as popular as ever!

For Nutrition Week and to celebrate healthier eating at Kings Langley, residents were able to create and eat their own version of what a good salad is for them.

“We find appetites change as we get a little older, so we take every opportunity to promote healthy choices for our residents. Of course, we also wanted residents to have some fun, so as a team we thought this idea was a great way of engaging them to do so,” said Parveen, Kitchen Supervisor at Kings Langley.

Back in 1925, a man called Neville Westwood travelled Australia with one goal on his incredible journey – to share the story of Jesus. Inspired by the Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys, which captured his imagination at the time, Westwood embarked on this adventure. After four years of planning and to mark the 100th anniversary of Westwood’s original trip, Bubsie, a 1925 Citroën, along with a group of Christian enthusiasts from The Incredible Journey team, has been retracing his route.

We were lucky to welcome them at Kings Langley, giving residents the chance to engage with a vehicle reminiscent of a bygone era and hear fascinating stories from The Incredible Journey team.

Gold and Green colours filled the courtyard at the Kings Langley ‘Sportsfest’ held last Thursday. The two teams were determined by the residents first names – A to L was Green and M to Z was Gold. Residents joined forces with family, friends and staff to keenly and fiercely compete in this year’s games, which included Granny Pants, Connect the Dots, Fishing, Tumbling Towers and of course, the crowd favourite – foam noodle soccer.

The smell of BBQ cooking built anticipation for the yummy sausage sandwiches.

After a day of hotly contested challenges, the Gold team raised the trophy high, continuing their winning streak from last year.

The Kings Langley Sportsfest is fast becoming a highlight on the resident calendar, and we hear the Green team is already gearing up to put their winning shoes on for 2026!

"Thank you everyone for the delightful Spring Morning Tea today in your sunny courtyard. The delicious treats served in pretty bone China cups, all on a flower-covered table, were just lovely. Most of all, thank you for your warm welcome, your endless kindness, patience and especially your smiles." - Resident’s daughter

How lucky to have fresh and free spinach direct from Lyn’s garden on offer yesterday.

Lyn is one of our prolific gardeners at our Kings Langley Village. Staff and residents are very lucky to enjoy fresh food in abundance straight from her lush gardens. Yesterday’s stash was bountiful stems of delicious deep green spinach offered free.

Story Book Day was held at Kings Langley, where residents chose a favourite book to read. Staff dressed up as characters to make the day more fun and engaging.

Reading to older people provides significant benefits, including improved cognitive function, reduced stress and anxiety, increased social connection, and most importantly, the preservation of life’s memories and experiences.

“Our residents loved the day. They were positive, happy and connected to the experience. Our team puts a lot of effort into ensuring residents tap into nostalgic associations, which are positive reminders of self during happy and enjoyable times,” said Jocee, Recreational Activities Supervisor.

It was a meaningful day to wear yellow and ask a simple but powerful question: R U OK? The focus was on staff wellbeing - reminding everyone that support is available, and that it’s okay to reach out when life gets demanding, especially in the workplace.

Throughout the day, it was acknowledged and reinforced that the health and happiness of our staff are essential - not only for their own wellbeing but also for the quality of care we provide to our residents. Savanthie highlighted how important this is for our families, emphasising that wellbeing is a shared responsibility.

To support this, staff were invited to explore MindRazr, our employee wellbeing platform designed specifically for Adventist Aged Care employees. It offers a wide range of audio and video content to support every aspect of wellbeing - from mental health and physical fitness to sleep and mindfulness. 💛

Dad’s and Father figures, accompanied by family and friends, celebrated Father's Day with a tasty lunch, music and some fun juggling entertainment. There were also delicious vanilla cupcakes for morning tea which everyone enjoyed.

We like to show our appreciation for our dads by honouring them on this special day and in a way that brings a lighthearted smile – thank you.

Dementia Week: Day 7 – Supporting Each Other

🗣 Focus: Caring for people experiencing dementia is rewarding – but it can be a lot of work.

• Talk with each other – your colleagues are there to support you
• Debrief after tough situations – your team leader is a good listening ear
• Use your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) if you feel a need for some short-term counselling and wellbeing support – this is a free employer funded service
• Look after your physical and mental self, look out for your colleagues – this work is a very important community service

Takeaway: Be kind to yourself and look after your own wellbeing. You can’t care for others if you’re running on empty.

A note to end Dementia Week 2025 - “Nobody Can Do It Alone.”

This powerful message reminds us that supporting those living with dementia takes teamwork, compassion, and a shared commitment from all of us.

Dementia Week: Day 6 – The Person Behind the Dementia

🗣 Focus: Who are they beyond the diagnosis?

Know their life history, interests, and values. These details help build rapport, connection and trust.

Takeaway: Treat the person, not the disease.

Look out for tomorrow’s subject😊
