After months of caring for both his parents, Mat and his partner Jenna were finally taking a rare moment for themselves, a trip to India they’d long planned. Just before takeoff, Mat’s dad had a fall. He’d told Mat not to worry, to go and enjoy the rare moment of adventure. Soon after they arrived, Mat got a call that his dad had been taken to hospital. A conversation that ended up being the last time they spoke.

At Mat and Jenna’s wedding, just a few months after his father had passed away, a quiet conversation with his aunties revealed something he hadn’t realised - his mum, who had been living with them in Australia after her recovery, had been feeling lonely. Despite all the support around her, she missed her sense of home in Canada. Mat reflects on the moment he released that he needed to listen to the emotional needs of his mum, even when they were hard to hear.
