Great news... this sturdy little unit and two of its friends have joined the team at Rockingham Eye Clinic! This is a HEPA-filter air cleaner, which rapidly clears the air in the office of particles, including viruses.
Clean air is critical in reducing risk from Covid-19 infections as well as other infections such as RSV and influenza, both of which are approaching peak numbers. The increased safety to our patients and staff means that masks in the consulting rooms are no longer necessary.
Masks are still very helpful in situations of poor airflow and crowded rooms, so are still recommended for those settings. For more detail on the effectiveness and types of masks, please see earlier posts on this site.
For those of our patients who are immune compromised or feel vulnerable, our staff are still very happy to don masks on request, and we'd recommend you continue to do so.

Rockingham Eye Clinic: the first full time medical eye service in the Rockingham and Kwinana regions
Our clinic was the initiative of founder and principal surgeon Dr David de la Hunty, who trained as a medical doctor in Perth, WA (University of Western Australia). After graduation in 1986, he worked as a public hospital junior doctor in various Perth teaching hospitals, then as a senior service doctor (Registrar) in the fields of General Surgery, General Medicine and Plastic Surgery.
In 1996 he spent a year working in the United Kingdom in both Plymouth, Devon and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumbria, completing his general Fellowship in medical and surgical Ophthalmology, with a special interest in strabismus (eye turns) and Pædiatric ophthalmology.
He returned to Australia in early 1997 to receive his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists (later FRANZCO) and of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He took up Consultant Ophthalmologist positions at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and at Fremantle Hospital.
In late 1997, recognising a need for a fulltime service in the Rockingham and Kwinana Regions, he formed the Rockingham Eye Clinic at its original address in Leghorn St, Rockingham, in associated with the late Dr Doug Starling. Performing surgery at both Rockingham General Hospital until 2016 (where he was Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee), and at Waikiki Private Hospital to the present, he began providing surgical services also at Perth Eye Hospital which enables timely and cost-effective eye surgery for uninsured patients to enable them to avoid long public hospital waiting lists.
He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (WA Branch).
Rockingham Eye Clinic moved to its present location at the Waikiki Specialist Centre, 217 Willmott Drive, Waikiki, in 2002 and continues today as the only full-time Eye Clinic in the Southern Metropolitan corridor between the cities of Perth and Mandurah.
Dr de la Hunty sees patients of all ages, and offers:
- Cataract surgery (all private insurers, plus low rates for cataract surgery without private insurance)
- Strabismus (eye turn) procedures
- Medical, Laser, Implant and Surgical management of Glaucoma
- Eyelid surgery
