Did you know that not only does your vestibular system help with body balance, but also your eye balance? Your eyes need to be able to balance in your skull as your head moves so that you can see the world clearly and steadily.
The video below is a simulation of what the world can look like for patients when they have a sudden loss of function in their vestibular system, and the symptom is called ‘oscillopsia’.
If you have or are experiencing this symptom, give us a call to book with one of our physios on 94824511.

Spotted at Melbourne Museum last year by one of our physios, scans of Triceratops skulls show they had inner ear labyrinths like us with 3 semi-circular canals! I wonder if they ever got dizzy too?

“The lateral semicircular canal reveals that the basicranial axis of Triceratops is approximately 45° to the ground, which is an effective angle to display their horns as well as frill, and to graze. The semicircular canals of Triceratops are relatively smaller than those of primitive ceratopsians, such as Psittacosaurus and Protoceratops, suggesting that sensory input for the reflexive stabilization of gaze and posture of Triceratops was less developed than that of primitive ceratopsians.”

Did you know it is possible to have an inner ear problem and not experience vertigo? People can have vestibular agnosia, where they have an impaired sensation of dizziness, and perhaps only report feeling imbalanced. This is one reason why we do a thorough assessment for everyone including testing for BPPV even if there is no report of vertigo. Give us a call on 94824511 to book in if you are experiencing a sense of imbalance, or dizziness.

Vestibular dysfunction, causing dizziness and imbalance, is a common yet poorly understood feature in patients with TBI. Damage to the inner ear, nerve, brainstem, cerebellum and cerebral hemispheres may all affect vestibular functioning, hence, a multi-level ...

Vestibular Migraines can be very debilitating. Have you had an experience like Sam’s story below? The good news is that Vestibular Migraine often responds to neck treatment and exercises in conjunction with medication as prescribed by your doctor, and we’d love to help. Call us on 94824511 to book in at one of our 6 locations across Sydney.

After being diagnosed with vestibular migraine at 36, Sam spoke to us about his experience with migraine and the lead up to his diagnosis.

I started feeling dizzy one day and didn’t think much of it, at first I thought maybe I had a bug.
After a few days, I still felt dizzy, and the symptoms were worsening. Some days it got so bad I was really disorientated and exhausted.

After multiple visits to the GP, Audiology testing and an MRI, I was told I had a mild benign cerebellar ectopia – which means the cerebellar tonsils are below the base of the skull. After further consultations, I was eventually diagnosed with vestibular migraine.

When they finally gave me a diagnosis, I felt a great sense of relief but was also left wondering how long it will affect me for. The doctor told me it could be weeks, months years before I don’t experience them anymore.

When the symptoms are mild, I get a wavy type feeling, but when the episodes are more severe, they can be really debilitating. It takes so much more energy and focus to perform normal tasks it leaves me exhausted.
I have built a tolerance to the mild episodes, but the big ones really are depressing. The best way I can describe the sensation is like being drunk but without any logical impairment. It leaves me off- balance with headaches that come and go depending on the severity.

It has been hard to cope with sometimes. Because a migraine can’t be seen, it’s hard for people to understand how horrible, depressing and debilitating they can be. It feels almost like because it can’t be seen, people think you’re making it up.

Luckily, I have a good network of people around me which has allowed me to have a safe space but in the wider world it’s very clear that the severity and variety of migraines are not widely known. I have only learned through my own experience with migraine and hope by sharing this more people will understand and that people living with migraine will feel more confident talking about it.
