Yoorrook Walk for Truth
Omnia Community Health is committed to reconciliation and recognises that truth telling is a vital part of healing. In line with this commitment, members of the Building Healthy Communities Team joined the Wallan leg of the Yoorrook Walk for Truth on Tuesday 21 April, walking in solidarity with First Nations communities.
In 2025, Travis Lovett, a proud Kerrupmara/Gunditjmara and Boandik man, and one of five commissioners of the Yoorrook Justice Commission, walked nearly 400 kilometres from Portland on Gunditjmara Country, where colonisation began in Victoria, to Victorian Parliament House. The walk culminated in the presentation of the Commission’s findings to the Victorian Government. Thousands of Victorians joined Travis along different stages of the journey, demonstrating strong community support for truth telling in Victoria.
This year, Travis is leading an even longer journey from Melbourne to Canberra. The National Walk for Truth calls on the Commonwealth Government to commit to a national truth telling process as a meaningful step towards healing and lasting change.
Day 3 of the walk commenced at Wallan Community Park and concluded at Hadfield Park. The day included education from a Wurundjeri educator on native plants encountered along the route and their traditional uses, powerful speeches from Travis Lovett, Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson, and Taungurung Elder Uncle Larry Walsh, and concluded with a special Message Stick Handover between Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Taungurung Elders.
