Considering Fertility Support? Here’s Why a Specialist Can Make All the Difference

When you’re thinking about having a baby soon or struggling to conceive, you might assume that your only options are either a GP for basic advice or an IVF clinic. But there’s a middle ground that many don’t realise exists, and it can make a world of difference.

When you work with a fertility-focused medical practitioner, like myself, you can expect a deeper, more holistic view of your health. My background as a women’s health and reproductive medicine specialist means I go beyond routine assessments to look at everything from hormone balance to lifestyle factors that could impact fertility. While general practitioners are excellent for primary care, their training doesn’t always cover the nuanced factors that affect fertility. And jumping straight to IVF may not be necessary for most women—a thorough, root-cause approach can often help you achieve conception without invasive interventions.

What you might not expect, though, is that fertility support with a specialist also helps you gain insight into your cycle, stress levels, lifestyle, genetics, nutritional needs, and more—all working together to create the healthiest possible environment for conception. Here’s a piece of advice that fuels both my practice and my purpose…

“Never stop asking why—no one knows your body like you do.”

At a recent advanced medical pathology conference, I was reminded why questioning the norm is so vital. My passion has always been to champion women, to help them step into their power as their very own health advocates, asking more from their healthcare.
In functional pathology, we go beyond surface symptoms, diving into the “why, and why, and how” behind chronic issues rather than just masking them. And that’s what I want for every woman—to know she doesn’t have to blindly accept quick-fix solutions or overlook her own intuition.

No one knows your body, your story, or how you truly feel better than you do. The choice is always yours, and with the right guidance, you can make decisions that align with your unique needs and wellbeing. Blind faith in professionals, even with the best intentions, can sometimes lead us away from what we truly need.

Why I Don’t Offer Face-to-Face Consultations Anymore... and Why Virtual is the Way Forward 🌏

I don’t offer in-person consultations, and while they work well for some, I’ve found that virtual consultations are a perfect fit for my clients’ lives and needs.

Many of my clients are women juggling full-time jobs, busy family schedules, and even partners who want to be involved—especially when we’re discussing something as important as fertility. In virtual sessions, you can have your partner or a loved one join in for support, all from the comfort of your own space.

With my fully online approach, appointments are flexible and fit around your day, whether that’s during an evening break or a weekend morning. There’s no need to commute or rearrange your whole schedule; you can connect with me wherever you’re most comfortable, whether in pj's or a face mask (no judgement here—I love it!). I truly believe that being at ease helps with sharing openly and absorbing information, making our time together even more valuable. And still claim on your health insurance...?! 🎉

Plus, many of my clients aren’t in the same state—or even the same country! I love meeting women from all over the world, and with the current exchange rate, the Australian dollar offers amazing value for my international clients! 💰

As we get closer to wrapping up another year, I find myself thinking back to the younger me—the one with big dreams, endless curiosity, and a heart wide open to the world. Little did she know that life would bring some unexpected twists, turns, and the biggest lessons. Here’s what I’d tell her today, and what I hope resonates with each of you.

Dear 9-month-old baby Megyn,

Right now, you’re full of wonder, with so many dreams dancing around in your mind. Life looks simple, safe, and filled with possibility. I wish I could keep you there forever, wrapped in innocence. But there’s a journey waiting for you, and it’s one you’re strong enough to take on.

You’ll face struggles no child or young mother should ever have to endure. People will doubt you, even dismiss you, and there will be times you feel uncertain, lost, and heartbroken. You’ll be told you can’t be “somebody” and that your dreams are too big for a girl in your position. But remember this: every challenge you face will only make you stronger. You’ll push forward, and each struggle will become part of the story that gives you purpose and clarity.

One day, you’ll find a love that lasts a lifetime—your soulmate, your forever person. You’ll become a mother to beautiful children and will face unimaginable loss along the way. But you will rise, again and again, and that journey will lead you to find your true calling. You’ll turn your struggles into a gift, helping women understand and nurture their bodies in ways you wish you’d known. You’ll inspire others, showing them that it’s possible to rewrite their own stories, no matter where they started.

So, little Megyn, keep dreaming big. There are wonderful things coming your way, from love and family to a purpose you never could have imagined. This season, I’m taking time to reflect, plan, and consciously wind down—avoiding that typical end-of-year burnout that often sneaks up on me before the holidays. I’m preparing for an incredible 2025 with a hive of new ideas and offerings.

Two core values driving me forward are Creativity and Accessibility. Creativity fuels everything I do—constantly inspiring new ways to support women’s health and wellbeing, making sure each offering is meaningful and impactful.

As a mum of four, and often cooking dinner for a table of 6 adults and 2 kids, I’m all too familiar with how the rising cost of living affects us all.

Feeling pressed for time in the morning? Here’s a smoothie recipe to make breakfast simple, satisfying, and stress-free!

Here's a SUPER-SIMPLE Energising Morning Smoothie 🤤

Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of choice)
- 1 handful of spinach (don’t worry, you won’t taste it!)
- 1/2 banana (for natural sweetness, micronutrients and fibre)
- 1/2 cup frozen berries (packed with antioxidants and flavour)
- 1 scoop protein powder (your choice!)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (for fibre and healthy fats)
Optional: 1/4 avocado (adds creaminess and healthy fats)

Instructions:
Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
Pour into your favourite to-go cup and enjoy!
This smoothie takes less than five minutes to make and provides a balanced combo of protein, fibre, and healthy fats—keeping you energised and focused all morning long. No more skipping breakfast out of frustration or lack of time!

The DIFFERENCE between Pampering and True Relaxation 💆‍♀️✨

When it comes to looking after ourselves, there's a difference between surface-level pampering (like a fab facial!) and practices that really support our body systems at a deeper level.

So, what’s happening behind the scenes when we relax?

Pampering—facials, massages, and spa days—can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of indulgence we all deserve.

But deep relaxation practices—like slow, intentional breathing, mindfulness, or restorative yoga—have a powerful effect on the nervous system and neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, our “feel-good” hormones.

These hormones don’t just make us feel happy; they lower cortisol (our stress hormone), support restful sleep, and boost immune function.

Want to know how these neurotransmitters work? Serotonin, for example, influences mood and energy balance, reducing feelings of anxiety. Dopamine, meanwhile, gives us motivation and rewards us with a “happy boost” for resting.

When we intentionally slow down, we let these hormones do their job, calming our mind, balancing our hormones, and giving our nervous system the downtime it craves.

Confession time...

Rewind a year, and I felt more anxiety than I did a woman. I was entering perimenopause, procrastinating like it was a sport, and filling my downtime with reality TV marathons and doom-scrolling on my phone. The comparisonitis? Oh, it was STRONG.

What I didn’t realise was the deeper toll this was taking on my nervous system and spirit. Watching high-drama shows and endlessly scrolling wasn’t just harmless entertainment—it was constantly activating my Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), or “fight or flight” mode, flooding my system with cortisol. And while cortisol has become the “hype hormone” lately, it’s dangerous to single out one hormone as the culprit. Every hormone has its role, and focusing on just one or blindly self-prescribing to “fix” it often causes way more harm than good.

And here’s a truth I’ve come to embrace: we mirror what we surround ourselves with.
When I was consuming negative, drama-fuelled content, I was unknowingly inviting more stress and imbalance into my life—the complete opposite of the harmony I was craving. Now, I’m mindful about choosing things that nurture my spirit and support my peace.

That’s why I traded reality TV for reading, especially romance novels, and it’s been a game-changer. Reading helps me wind down completely, activate my Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) (the “rest and digest” mode), and reset my nervous system. Instead of feeling drained, I’m refreshed and rebalanced.
